Last Thursday night, on the first warm evening of spring, the LOVE HER Vancouver event in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada saw me make my way into the stylish Fairmont Waterfront Hotel ballroom, where I was immediately met with a glass of pink champagne, tables of fine cheeses, assorted cured meats and delicate hors d’oeuvres and a sea of elegant people, all there to support the early detection and treatment of ovarian cancer.

Once I had snacked to my heart’s content (I seriously could not get enough of those seared albacore tuna bites!), I was ushered to my seat and welcomed by emcee and Global News anchor Sophie Lui, who presented various speakers as well as the 2017 Virginia Greene Award recipient, curve model and cancer fighter extraordinaire Elly Mayday. Since her diagnosis in 2013, Elly has dedicated herself to raising awareness about ovarian cancer and promoting body positivity—so, LOVE HER!
The charity auction got underway with an impressive performance by talented caricaturist Dan Dunn, whose whimsical paintings raised thousands of dollars for Ovarian Cancer Canada. Other items up for grabs (and girl, were they ever grabbed): a luxurious Whistler getaway and VIP access to New York Fashion Week.

The night ended with a bang, as multicoloured confetti burst from around the stage following a stunning fashion show that featured trendy yet timeless pieces from Marilyn’s of West Vancouver. I personally couldn’t take my eyes off of a sheer yellow gown that seemed to drift down the runway like petals of a daffodil in the breeze.

Thank you, Ovarian Cancer Canada, for a fun, fashionable and important night to honour the women in our lives. —Johnnie Smart
Psst: Coincidentally, last month was Daffodil Month for the Canadian Cancer Society. While April may be over, it’s always the perfect time of year to support the research, early detection and treatment of cancers of all kinds.
