History is being made right now at the Vancouver Art Gallery and we were privileged enough to be among the first to lay eyes on the stunning exhibition responsible.
Beautifully showcasing the work of China’s foremost designer, Guo Pei: Couture Beyond is the only fashion-focused presentation to ever grace the museum. Although internationally known for the elaborate 55-pound yellow cape she lent Rihanna for the 2015 Met Gala, Guo Pei has been making waves for decades, launching her own label and atelier, Rose Studio in 1997, and outfitting China’s athletes for the 2008 Olympic Games. She made Time magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People and is one of only two Asian designers to become a guest member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris. Her theatrical creations aim to capture China’s last imperial dynasty—favouring intricate embroidery and luxurious fabrics.
Presented in collaboration with Atlanta’s SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film, more than 40 of Guo Pei’s mesmerizing designs are available for viewing until January 20th, 2019. —Rachel Johnston
