Cruise Control

December 28, 2018

With the temperatures steadily dropping, escaping to tropical climes is jumping to the top of our priority list. Sunshine and poolside cocktails are available in plenty of Caribbean hot spots, but with the brand-new Celebrity Edge cruise ship—a high-tech liner homeported in Fort Lauderdale with designer heavyweights behind it and never-seen-before features—your getaway decision is a no-brainer. We pinky swear that this will win you over even if a cruise ain’t your thing. —Karen Kwan

stay. You know this isn’t your average ship when the Edge’s godmother is activist Malala Yousafzai, who epitomizes the ship’s dedication to diversity, inclusion and gender equality. Book one of the surprisingly spacious Staterooms featuring Infinite Verandah, which serves up floor to ceiling views of the sea, and touch screens you can personalize to your desired settings for lighting, shades, temp and service for each time of day.

savour. The young at heart will enjoy the Le Petit Chef dinner experience at Le Grand Bistro where your supper is supplemented with a playful digital storytelling right on your table setting (think Ratatouille-esque). At the Oceanview Cafe, even that friend with the most restricted diet will find something to fill their plate with, from pad Thai and butter chicken to pizza and fresh salads. And the days you’re too weary from the sunshine to hit up the buffet, the refined à la carte options at Cosmopolitan (think garlicky escargots and juicy turkey medallions served with creamy risotto) will satisfyingly fuel you before you head to the Martini Bar for a nightcap or to the hot tub for an after-dark soak.

sip. The Edge’s groundbreaking Magic Carpet, a luxuriously decked out cantilevered platform that moves from deck 2 to 16, is a fantastic spot to sip a glass of bubbly during the day. At night, order an elderflower martini in the Martini Bar and take a seat in one of the club chairs beneath the show-stopping chandelier, a Jouin Manku design composed of 765 illuminated LED blades. Or is there a big game on? Grab a cold beer in the stunning Rooftop Garden (designed by Tom Wright, the designer behind the famous Burj Al Arab in Dubai) where you can lounge on the sculptural teak seating in front of the big screen.

sweat. With top notch Technogym equipment in an expansive gym that’s flooded with natural light, your cruise can become a luxe health retreat. For the gym bunnies who prefer group classes, start with morning meditation class and book sessions ranging from Spinning and suspension. Prefer to sweat it out in the privacy of your room? A Peloton bike can be set up in your room for the duration of your cruise. Post-workout, refuel at the dreamy Eden restaurant, where three-story windows and a lush, whimsical space designed by Patricia Urquiola will maintain that Zen feel as you dig into a lentil quinoa bowl.

spa. Step into the Kelly Hoppen-designed 22,000 square foot spa aboard the Edge and its inspired-by-nature serenity will make you feel instantly more relaxed. Treatments rival those of luxe five-star spas, including Elemis Biotec facials and the Hot Mineral Body Boost, during which you lie on the MLX quartz table (where warmed amber and quartz crystals conform to your body to promote deeper relaxation as you enjoy the amber balm and restorative facial). You may be so blissed out after the spa you’ll need the Edge app’s handy wayfinding tool to get back to your room.
