This May, we’re honouring motherhood by chatting with some of our favourite mom bloggers, influencers and content creators about the highs, the lows and the many moments in-between. —Vita Daily
Hi Sandra! Tell us a little bit about you and what do you do!?
I am a new mom to my daughter, Everly, and currently on maternity leave. When I go back to work in December it will be as the head of English at a high school in Vancouver, and as a part-time yoga instructor at various locations in the city.
How do you use your platform to impact other moms—and parents—who follow you?
I use my platform to showcase the real-life challenges and joys of being a mom, along with a focus on wellness in the form of yoga. I began my social media journey through yoga, but over the past year it has also expanded into a forum for sharing my journey to motherhood. I didn’t have an easy time getting pregnant, and my pregnancy became high-risk in my third trimester. These are the kinds of things that most people don’t think about—or talk about—when they decide they’re ready for kids. I experienced a lot of self-doubt, anxiety and grief during my journey to motherhood, but I am glad that there is a burgeoning online community about topics like infertility.
What’s your personal-style/beauty mantra?
Simple and sustainable. Even before becoming a mom I lived a fast-paced life working more than one job, so I’ve always needed my beauty routine to be quick and easy. While I love the look of lash extensions, balayage or gel nails, I have never had enough time to maintain a regular beauty regimen. That being said, I still like to look fresh and put-together. I am drawn to classy, feminine lines that are still comfortable enough to wear on the go. And these days, the most important thing to me is that my clothes hold up through multiple cycles of laundry—because nothing stays clean around a newborn! I loved being told that I had a “motherly glow” during my pregnancy, and I believe that the most beautiful thing about a person is their smile.
What would the Mother’s Day of your fantasies be? And what, in reality, does Mother’s Day usually look like at your house?
This is my very first Mother’s Day, and being able to celebrate it at all is my greatest dream come true. Even still, I hope our day consists of baby snuggles, family time and a little bit of movement—some yoga on our rooftop or a walk along the seawall. My favourite pasttime is taking Baby Everly on adventures with us and doing the types of things we would normally do—just with a baby in tow!
Did motherhood come easy to you, or were there challenges (if so, any in particular you’d like to share)?
We spent four years trying to have a baby and eventually conceived on our third round of IVF. The process was draining and difficult, but becoming pregnant—and actually being a mom—has been the most wonderful experience of my life. I was worried that I would go stir crazy being on maternity leave because I have never taken time off work. But I love being home with my baby and I appreciate having a full year off to nurture her and our relationship!
The hardest thing about being a mom? The best thing?
Being a new mom redefines exhaustion. I know I’m lucky that my baby is a good sleeper, but I still find myself more tired than I’ve ever been and wondering when I’ll ever be able to sleep eight or more hours in a row. But all of it is worth it because being a mom is the most meaningful job I’ve ever had. When I see her smile or get to witness her milestones, my heart bursts in a way I didn’t know was possible. Every baby is a miracle, and Everly will always be my miracle.
