Juno-nominated Artists Talk Plant-Based Eating (Win! A Morningstar Farms Plant-Based Prize Pack!)

May 27, 2019

Just in time for barbecue season, Canada’s beloved brother-sister country duo, The Reklaws, are sharing their tips on to amp up your grilling repertoire with plant-based foods like veggie burgers from Morningstar Farms (because nothing goes together better than a good ol’ cookout and country tunes)! —Vita Daily

Hi Reklaws! Tell us a bit about yourselves to start!

Stuart: Hey Vita! I’m Stuart Walker and this is my sister, Jenna, and we make up the group The Reklaws. We grew up in Cambridge, Ontario, which is where we started to make music. It’s a funny story, but growing up on a farm, we started to play music at pig races, which is where The Reklaws began. In 2013, we won the Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase, which really put us on a platform and it’s just been up from here!

Now that summer’s here, how often do you grill?

Jenna: We love the summer and being outdoors and, naturally, there’s always a barbecue nearby. We have a cottage up in South Hampton and love to go there with our friends and family and entertain. Being Canadian, we know how quick the summer passes, so we really take advantage of these hotter months and get on the grill as often as we can!

And … what do you grill (let’s talk plant-based here)?

Jenna: Of course, MorningStar Farms! The summer is a busy time for us with touring and shows and sometimes the healthiest food isn’t available for us to eat when we’re on the road. We also don’t like to eat super-greasy food because it doesn’t make us feel our best before a performance. MorningStar Farms veggie burgers are a perfect option since they’re quick and easy to make and eat in a pinch. We love to pair it with grilled veggies, too!

Do you "miss the meat"? Why or why not?

Stuart: Jenna and I grew up on farm where in our family it’s not a popular thing to be vegetarian. We do still eat meat, but I think it’s important to incorporate more plant-based dishes into your diet. I’m a big guy and I like to eat, so as long as its tasty, I can get down with it!

Your favourite plant-based grilled dish is …?

Stuart: I really like MorningStar Farms burgers because they’re not trying to be like meat- they’re just making real plant-based ingredients taste delicious—and like I said, for me it really just comes down to taste.

Jenna: I agree, I really like the smokiness that comes from putting burgers and veggies on the grill. I think my favourite dish is the MorningStar Farms spicy black bean burger that has a bit of kick to it and stacking a grilled veggie kabob on the side.

And finally, on a musical note, what might a plant-based love song sound like?!

Stuart: I never really thought about this! I think it would definitely be something about my love for food and barbecuing and how I couldn’t live without them??? Maybe something like that!

Jenna: I’m not sure what that one would sound like off the top of my head, but maybe you’ll hear a plant-based love song this summer during one our shows, who knows!

Stuart: Yeah let us think about it and you’ll have to come to one our shows to see if it made the cut!
