Summer’s not all fun and games. In fact, the season’s often associated with extended sun exposure, alcohol consumption and reduced sleep … and studies are finding that these things have damaging effects to ones DNA. Newly launched Tru Niagen, a Health Canada-approved supplement that keeps cells healthier as we age, supports cellular health to help combat the impact of these elements. We chatted with Dr. Alyssa Dweck, representing Tru Niagen, on the health effects of the sun and the importance of cellular health as we head into July and August. —Vita Daily
Hi Dr. Dweck! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
I am an OB/GYN in New York practising for 25-plus years. My area of expertise is female sexual health and menopause, but I see women of all ages. I am an author of three books, I like to run in my free time and I have two grown sons who keep me on my toes.
We all know that the sun can have a negative impact on our skin—what are some of the other health effects of extended sun exposure, especially as we head into summer?
We all love the sun and one benefit of exposure is elevation of vitamin D. By the same token, the sun can damage the skin and lead to wrinkles, pigmentation changes and skin cancer since UV rays can cause cellular damage. Sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater is helpful to prevent.
What does the term "cellular health" mean and why should we pay attention to it?
Our bodies are composed of trillions of cells, each with a specific function. Cells can become damaged by stressors which include age, sun exposure, alcohol, inflammation … to name a few. Minimizing exposure to stressors can minimize cellular damage.
What is Tru Niagen? How is it used and what are its benefits?
Tru Niagen (nicotinamide riboside) is a specific form of vitamin B3 orally available to maintain cellular health. It helps cells to optimize energy production within the cells. Unlike other forms of vitamin B3 (like niacin), it is not known to activate enzymes related to flushing and has been studied for safety and efficacy in humans. Tru Niagen has been approved by Health Canada. Many users who supplement with Tru Niagen report improved sense of well-being.
What are your plans for the summer, and what will you do to preserve your cellular health through the season?
Love this question! I plan to continue to exercise regularly with my new puppy, Pearl, and keep up the incredible work of a busy gynecologist.
