Take Flight With FlyOver Iceland (Win! 4 Tickets to Experience Iceland in Vancouver!)

March 3, 2020

On one of those sunny February afternoons that make everyone living outside of Vancouver jealous, we took a leisurely stroll down to the end of Canada Place with several friends in tow. Our destination was Reykjavík and the Land of Fire and Ice—virtually, at least. We were going to check out the new FlyOver Iceland experience. On until May 3rd, 2020, its alternating, twice-hourly showtimes at FlyOver Canada give visitors the chance to soar high above Iceland in a single day—without ever leaving the Lower Mainland.

The experience started with a short film that explained some of Iceland’s rich history and mythology, from volcanoes and glaciers to Vikings, trolls and more, we were given the fascinating 411 on the roles of nature, time and humankind on this remarkable island. Then it was time for the main event. Our friends jostled their way to the front of the line, trying to snag the best seats, even though we assured them that, for this unique multi-sensory experience with its 20-metre spherical screen, every seat is in the front row.

As we buckled ourselves in, the laughter and excitement in the room were palpable—and then, suddenly, we were “flying,” with nothing in front of us except absolutely stunning glaciers and fjords. Thanks to special effects like wind, mist, scents and motion, we felt the ocean mist on our face and smelled green forests and sulfurous geysers. With each twist and turn, we felt ourselves rising up and swooping down, like birds in the sky. Our brains kept “instructing” us to lift up our dangling feet before they got dunked in the water below.

“Goodness!” squealed the woman next to us as she clutched her armrest, laughing. In fact, the exhilarating eight-minute experience seemed to make everyone in the room feel like a kid again—including us. And it certainly made us want to head to YVR and hop on a flight to experience the real Iceland in person some day; we’ll definitely be putting it on our bucket lists. In the meantime, another ride with FlyOver Canada, please! —Sheri Radford
