From sunny South Africa originally and growing up by the ocean on the West Coast of Canada, Zahné Theron’s motto has always been that life is better in a bikini. After graduating with a degree in fashion marketing, she decided to launch her own swimwear brand, focusing on stylish, supportive and sustainable swimwear that could take her customers from beach volleyball to poolside lounging without sacrificing comfort or cuteness. We chatted with Zahné about her gorgeous creations, and are giving you a chance to win a Bellini Bikini of your very own! —Vita Daily

Hi Zahné! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

I am the owner/founder of sustainable bikini brand, Bellini Bikini! Born in South Africa, raised in the beautiful west coast of Canada, I always grew up loving the sun and the outdoors. Ever since I can remember, I have loved swimsuits and fashion. I grew up as a competitive dancer, and my favourite part of the year was definitely when we got to see our costumes! I always knew that I wouldn’t take the traditional route when it came to starting a career. In Grade 11, I got the idea to start my own swimwear line simply because I felt like I couldn’t find what I was looking for when it came to bikinis. Once I graduated from high school, I went to Blanche Macdonald Centre for fashion marketing so I could get an idea of what it was like to work in the fashion industry, and in March of 2020, Bellini Bikini came to life!

What is Bellini Bikini and when and why did you decide to launch the brand?

Bellini Bikini is a sustainable women’s swimwear brand made for women who value comfort and quality and love to look and feel their best. I launched the brand in March of 2020, which was definitely a challenge due to the pandemic, but looking back, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I made the decision to launch the brand because I found it very difficult to find swimwear that was comfortable, flattering and wasn’t a simple, on-trend item that would go out of style in the next year. I also was always so upset when I got my items in the mail, and tiny swimsuits came wrapped in all kinds of plastic and unnecessary packaging, which is why we ship with minimal packaging where all items are reusable, recyclable or biodegradable!

What did you feel was missing in the women’s swimwear category, that you want to fill?

I think nowadays everyone is trying to be new and on trend, which is great for sales, but not for the longevity of the item you are buying! It was so hard for me to find staple pieces that would last years when it came to swimwear, which is why I wanted to ensure that our pieces would hold up. Finding good swimwear is almost just as hard as finding good lingerie, and nothing is worse than finding something you like, and it not being able to last in your collection.

Tell us about the following elements as they pertain to your brand: size inclusivity, sustainability and sexiness.

All of our items range from x-small to x-large and are made with eco-friendly materials. Our material is made from regenerated waste products such as plastic bottles and ocean waste. We have also ditched all plastics when it comes to our packaging, so things may look different than your average online purchase, but we promise, it’s better for the environment! All of our pieces are made to flatter you and keep you comfortable so you can look, and feel your best. It’s not everyday that you are walking around with minimal clothing, so it’s great when you can do it at the beach or pool and feel sexy and confident without sacrificing comfort. As for sizing, we are very happy to be able to give five choices, but we would love to expand and offer even more one day!

Your brand motto is “life is better in a bikini”—how so?

If you are in a bikini, it is probably summer or you live somewhere hot! Summer gives everyone a more laid back way of life. If you are in a bikini, you are generally accompanied by great people, great weather and maybe even some fun cocktails!

What are some swimwear trends you foresee for summer 2020?

For summer 2021, I see sport looks with bright colours, ties, maybe even some shine and florals!

What can we use our swimwear for when we can’t travel?

My favourite way to wear some of our pieces is with denim or even as a bralette. The Rayne Top looks very cute with some jeans and an oversized hoodie/button up, and you can’t go wrong with wearing our Liv Top when you aren’t feeling your typical bra. They also make great loungewear!

If you were stuck on a desert island, what one Bellini Bikini piece could you not live without?

I would definitely live in the Aubrey Top with the Rayne Bottoms. I love to mix and match and I know that I will be secure, no matter what!
