We celebrate all the world-class wineries that call our province home by supporting them year-round, but there is nothing wrong with an annual shout out either. It’s April and that means it’s officially BC Wine Month. Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley received its official sub-geographical indication last year (the first to receive that distinction outside of the Okanagan) and the area is most definitely the province’s newest wine destination to keep keen eyes on—and wine glasses at the ready. With its Mediterranean climate, the area, referred to as Canada’s Provence, is producing lovely wines. One winery we think is worth discovering is Unsworth Vineyards, and here are three of its wines to try this month. —Catherine Dunwoody
Charme de L’île Rosé. Unsworth’s flagship sparkling wine is Charme de’ L’ile ($26 at BC Liquor Stores), and this, its rose version, is made from all Pinot Noir and produced in the Charmat Method—much like a Prosecco.
Unsworth 2018 Pinot Noir. Available in limited quantities, Cowichan Valley’s cool climate results in a velvety Pinot Noir ($28 at online) that’s not too heavy for spring sipping.
Unsworth Rosé. Dry, made from Pinot Noir with berry notes and in a shade of pink that’s gorgeous, not garish ($21 at online).
