April 20, 2021

April’s annual B.C. Wine Month is still going strong—a prime time to sip ‘n’ support our province’s wineries. Here, five handpicked reds from all over beautiful B.C. that are essential wine rack additions. —Catherine Dunwoody

Blue Grouse Quill Red 2018. This blend of merlot, cabernet franc and marechal foch ($28 at Blue Grouse Winery in Duncan) pairs well with grilled steak and spring lamb. To further honour B.C. Wine Month, the winery is donating $1 per bottle of wine sold to Nourish Cowichan for families in need.

O’Rourke’s Peak Cellars 2018 Pinot Noir. Pair this velvety pinot ($32 at O’Rourke’s Peak Cellars in Lake Country) with osso bucco, or mushroom and white asparagus risotto.

Chaberton 2016 Meritage. Merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc come together in this full-bodied red ($26 at Chaberton Winery in Langley) with plummy notes and long finish; nice paired with a crispy skinned roast duck.

Roche Wines Nuances 2018. French-inspired, small batch wines—we are giving you a sneak peak of this lovely red blend ($32 at Roche Wines in Naramata), as this is newly available for non-club members as of May 15.

See Ya Later Ranch Poppy 2020. A fruit-forward red blend that tastes like the Okanagan ($18 at BC Liquor Stores); pair it with a sizzling burger right off the grill or a breakfast sandwich at weekend brunch.
