5 Spring/Summer Hiking Essentials

May 11, 2021

Our warm weather is so short-lived—all the more reason to get in as much outdoor exploration as possible during the spring and summer months. Canada has countless hiking trails through beautiful scenery from coast to coast, and the gear you have will play a big part in the overall enjoyment of this pastime. If you plan on hitting a great trail in the mountains, alongside a lake, or through the forest, be sure to have at least a few (if not all) of these hiking essentials. —Jennifer Cox

The Roots Canada Journey Quarter Zip Top ($98) features four-way stretch fabric that has a peached hand feel, which makes it feel very luxurious. Lounge around in this running top or wear it on a hike. It also comes with a circle ring puller and thumbholes for your adventures.

The MEC Arc’teryx Zeta SL Gore-Tex Jacket ($380) has a beautiful sleek fit and is made of super-light materials, so you can easily stash in your backpack, even when you have little space to spare. The Gore-Tex Paclite Plus technology pulls double-duty, blocking wind as well as repelling water.

Every hiker should have great hiking poles, like these McKINLEY Migra 03 Trekking Poles available at Atmosphere ($50). They have cushy EVA foam/cork grips, so you keep your hold and balance wherever your adventures take you, even the most difficult terrain. They are also adjustable to suit your needs.

The versatile Trek 500 hiking backpack from Decathalon ($130) will hold everything you need on your hiking trip, from water bottles and snacks to first-aid supplies, sunscreen, a jacket, etc. (you can carry up to 15 kilograms). It has front and under-bag access as well as five zipped and three mesh pockets, plus a water bottle holder, pole holder, rain cover, and tent holder.

These MERRELL Moab 2 Mid WP Women’s Hiking Boots (sold through Sports Experts, $180) offers more stability and reduces shocks upon impact with their Vibram TC5+ sole with lugs and Air Cushion system in the heel. The inner membrane seals out water and lets moisture escape so you can stay dry, too.
