Toronto Biz Sends Love Across Canada During August Romance Month (Win!)

We chatted with Clarri Hill co-founder Avree Scarcello to get her steamy advice on this topic! —Noa Nichol

Hi Avree! When and why did you launch Clarri Hill?

Clarri Hill is a family-owned business founded in Toronto in 2018. We are a small but mighty team, with over 30 years of experience in the home fragrance and gift industry. Clarri Hill was created with simple luxury in mind. We believe that experiencing luxurious scents and aromas should be easy and approachable for everybody so at the foundation of everything we do at Clarri Hill it’s focused on creating quality safe products made with the finest fragrances, that are locally sourced and natural-based. The products we offer are Reed & Aroma Diffusers, Candles, Essential Oils, Room Sprays, Hand Creams and Gift Sets.

What would you say makes Clarri Hill products unique?

It has been proven scientifically that scents can bring back memories that might otherwise never be recalled or can enhance an entire experience. So, when we begin our scent process we start with our experiences and science, and consider our favourite memories, the smells we associate with them, and then we integrate that into our formulas. Once we build out our lists, we love to look at how to integrate these initial scent ideas with popular scents, new trends and changing consumer preferences. All of our products are handmade, local and natural based and once they have been crafted, we test them in multiple groups to see what the favourites are. We use diverse focus and tester groups that help us narrow down the favourite scents ensuring that our products are ones that everyone will love. We are very proud of our craftsmanship, our formula and how we incorporate memories into our products.

August is Romance Month; how is your brand focused on adding or bringing back a little romance to Canadians’ lives via your products?

It’s been a hard 18-plus months. Canadians are starting to go out, starting to date and explore new relationships, or have existing relations that might need new ways to add a little spark. What we want to do is remind Canadians of the important role romance plays in a relationship and that our products will help you enrich the experience, simply by amplifying your senses with safe ingredients and fragrances.

How does our sense of smell play a key role in our romantic lives?

Science shows that certain smells have direct impacts on our moods, feelings and behaviours, because our nostrils carry these smells directly to the surface of our brains via the olfactory nerve (part of the limbic system, the same area that produces sexual desires). Without using too much science, this is the one senses that has direct access to our brain! By stimulating smell receptors in the nose with certain aromas and fragrances, it sends messages through the nervous system to the limbic system that can help boost your mood, calm anxieties, and can bring up feelings of attraction, enhanced emotions and elevate the entire mood.

What are your top tips to create the perfect atmosphere for a loved one?

One of the tips we recommend is to really personalize the experience with the scent(s) you choose. You can do this by incorporating essential oils and (of course) candles into your evening. Aroma diffusers, reed diffusers or mixing them with massage oils can create a very delicate and sensual atmosphere, while candles are the quintessential hallmark of romance. Some of the scents we recommend are patchouli, lavender and rose.

What, in your opinion, is the most romantic scent in the world?

Personally, I feel like the most romantic scent is rose. It reminds me of some of the best memories that I have with my partner who loves to surprise me with roses on a Wednesday. It is also my favourite perfume and one that my partner is very fond of.
