We have previously reviewed the Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old. For those who want to skip the link to that review, here is a summary: that scotch was awesome. Today, we’re doing double duty, tasting the 15 and 18 years olds at the same time.
First, the 15: the nose is superb. There is a gorgeous floral note sitting on top, reminiscent of tulips and honey. It is a distinct nose, a signature that sets it apart from other whiskies. The taste is velvety smooth, complex and well-rounded. The flavours are difficult to disentangle and the finish is not particularly long. Overall, it is a delightful and highly drinkable scotch that would pair well with a meal.
Next, the 18: the nose is an endless cavern of smells, ranging from oranges, vanilla and citrus to buttery baked croissants. The taste is both vivacious and deep, evoking citrus notes, fruit molasses and oak. It is a special whisky for special occasions.
The price difference between the two is considerable. About $200 for the younger teen and $420 for the eldest of this lot. For reference, the 12 is about $100. While the price difference between all three is justified, what you should choose is a matter of budget. Personally, we would spring for a bottle of the 12 Year Old with no hesitation, and buy the 18 if you get a raise (are you reading this, editor-in-chief?). —Guillaume Garih
