The 5 1980s Fashion Pieces You Need Now

March 18, 2022

What’s more fun than trends from our youth that come back around again?! It’s even more exciting to keep up on the fads when you still have the originals tucked away in storage. But if you don’t, and you’re looking to infuse your wardrobe with some distinctly rad 80s panache, check out these five 1980s fashion pieces you need now. (Note: All these items look great with crimped hair!) —Jennifer Cox

This summer be sure to have a pair of Clive Belted High Waist Shorts from Ulla Johnson ($384, sold at Nordstrom). These high-waist cargo shorts are made from soft cotton and feature retro embellishments like a ring-belt along with shiny gold-tone buttons. Pair it with a slang t-shirt… and don’t forget to cuff the sleeves.

Tie-dye hit everyone’s radar in the 60s and was back with a vengeance in the 80s. Tap into your groovy side with this Salem Eco Wavy Mini Skirt In Tie-Dye Print from PH5 ($345, sold at Holt Renfrew). This knitted mini skirt has a wavy asymmetric hem and side seam stripe detail to create a slimming optical illusion. It is also adorned in a striking pink tie-dye motif and finished with a contrasting ribbed waistband. Debbie Gibson would be proud!

Certain prints just scream the 80s, including stripes, houndstooth, and polka dots. The Ruffled V-neck Top from Canadian label Smythe ($325, sold through Simons) perfectly blends chic elegance and casual sophistication. The textured material features a pattern of large, contrasting dots and a ruffled V-neck that can be hooked closed. It’s the perfect top to pair with your favourite jeans for a charming, casual look.

There were only two kinds of “in” dresses in the 80s: sweater dresses and adorable knit dresses, like this one from Blumarine ($1150, sold through Ooh La La). We love all the nods to the decade: the open shoulder on one side, the flattering tapered fit, and the knit yoke with knot detailing. The soft pink hue is perfect for this season’s calming colour palette and gives it a modern upgrade.

This Jacquard Cropped Top from Georgio ($65) is sold through Boutique 1861. We don’t know what we love about it more: the oversized floral pattern, the puffy sleeves, or the jacquard material? They all lend themselves to a chic retro 80s kind of look. Paired with a great skirt and chunky shoes, and your throwback ensemble is complete!
