1990s BodyBreak Is Back In Fashion

May 18, 2022

Some very exciting Canadian fashion news today, from Toronto-born sustainable fashion brand Good For Sunday. The label has partnered with the iconic Canadian ’90s healthy living brand, BodyBreak, for an exclusive capsule collection. Designed with absolute nostalgia in mind, the Good for Sunday x BodyBreak collection is inspired by BodyBreak’s message of health and fitness and Good for Sunday’s commitment to ethically and sustainably made clothing. The best part? We got to chat with BodyBreak’s Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod to learn more! —Noa Nichol

Congrats on launching your capsule collection with Good For Sunday! How did this partnership come about, and what made it a perfect (fashion) fit?

Why thank you! Demi and Anthony (the owners of Good For Sunday) reached out to us directly regarding this collaboration and we immediately thought it would be a great fit. In addition, we respected and related to what Anthony and Demi have achieved as entrepreneurs to build their business and brand. We also felt their passion for this BodyBreak collection and commitment. We also believe this is a perfect fit because Good for Sunday very much wants to make a difference. Having this as part of your core values (as we did with BodyBreak) definitely has a positive impact on all decisions that are made. Good for Sunday being 100 per cent made in Canada under socially conscious manufacturing practices was also important to us as well as supporting causes like mental health and using materials that have a lower impact on the planet.

What’s included in the collection, and how was BodyBreak’s message of health and fitness (not to mention, some good old 1990s nostalgia) incorporated? Who are these piece for?

This collection was designed with absolute nostalgia in mind, and features the ’90s inspired prints, colours and vibrancy that encapsulated our healthy living brand. From the BodyBreak Original T-Shirt to the BodyBreak Sport Sweatshirt and the BodyBreak Keep Fit & Have Fun T-Shirt, we feel this collection features fun, trendy and comfortable ways to be active. The mission for this collaboration is to embrace the diversity and inclusivity BodyBreak has represented over the years: living a healthier, active lifestyle regardless of age, gender, race or ability. The pieces are for every Canadian—those who grew up with us and beyond. We think BodyBreak reminds them of a simpler time, their younger years, when they didn’t have a mortgage, car payment and all they had to worry about was what’s for dinner as they watched Body Break on TV.

Do you each have a favourite item from the collection?

All the designs have very special memories and stories attached to them so it’s difficult to have a favourite. The BodyBreak Original T-shirt design shows that BodyBreak was coming out of Canada—Canadian-made. We wanted to do this because of our personal experiences when we proudly represented Canada in our athletic endeavours (Hal in baseball and Joanne in track). This T-shirt design was worn in our first BodyBreak filmed in July of 1988. Today, the original tee hangs in our gym!

How has health and fitness changed since the days of BodyBreak?

We would say that technology has helped health and fitness evolve as it has revolutionizd the way we can monitor our health and motivate others!

OK, we’ve got to know: how are you two Keeping Fit and Having Fun these days, especially as we head into summer?!

These days we’re spending lots of time hiking, golfing and cycling adventures. That’s how we plan on keeping fit and having fun this summer!
