Dear Lucy: Please Help Us Find Our Most Radiant, Resilient Skin (Win!)

February 7, 2023

When launching her skincare brand, Caity Cameron was clear on what she wanted: more transparency, greater sustainability efforts, better clinical results. And so Dear Lucy was born: conscious skincare delivering real results. We chatted with Caity to learn more, and are giving you a chance to win (for yourself, and a friend)! —Noa Nichol

When and why did you launch Dear Lucy?

Dear Lucy launched February 7, 2023, after more than two years of development. The process began when I couldn’t find an effective, one-step skincare routine that targeted my skin concerns and fit my lifestyle. I decided to create my own. I hired leading experts to help with formulation, testing, regulatory compliance and manufacturing—and I made the safest, most effective and sustainable product possible. I wanted to create a luxury skincare solution for busy women who value high-quality, socially responsible skincare. I like to think of Dear Lucy as a love letter to my girls (my youngest daughter is named Lucy); every decision that went into creating it was made with them in mind.

What niche were/are you aiming to fill?

I wanted to create the most effective product possible, clinically proven but without compromising sustainability or aesthetics. It had to be the best product I’ve ever used, or it wasn’t worth making. And it had to look beautiful on my counter! I also wanted to cut the noise I often hear in the beauty industry. I love luxury skincare, but I’m often left wanting more from the brands on the market. More transparency, greater sustainability efforts, better clinical results. And as the mother of daughters, I’m also left wanting less: less misinformation, less fear mongering and less judgement. At Dear Lucy, transparency is key in building trust and a sustainable customer base. I refuse to use unregulated marketing terms such as “clean,” “clinical grade,” “medical grade” and “professional grade.” Instead, I believe in being honest and straightforward with our customers about our product and its ingredients. By doing so, I hope to establish a loyal customer base that shares Dear Lucy’s values of sustainability and transparency.

What product do you currently offer, and what makes it unique?

Right now we’re focused on one product, our Marine Antioxidant Serum. It’s a powerful all-in-one serum that delivers the results of a multi-step routine in just one bottle. And it’s clinically proven to significantly improve the appearance of dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles after eight weeks. The silky, deeply moisturising formula instantly hydrates, leaving skin feeling smooth, plump and dewy—all while reducing the visible signs of photodamage over time. The serum features a targeted blend of vitamin C derivative tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, alpha-arbutin and our polyphenol-rich seaweed extract for maximum smoothing benefits. Marine Antioxidant Serum is made here in Vancouver.

For people with hyperpigmentation and sensitive skin, what’s some of your best advice when it comes to care?

Sun safety is number one. Wearing sunscreen every day is essential for anyone who cares about their skin, especially those of us battling hyperpigmentation and dark spots. The brightening ingredients in our Marine Antioxidant Serum include vitamin C, alpha arbutin, seaweed extract—all clinically proven to brighten and even skin tone. I’d also recommend retinoids at night if your skin can tolerate it. I’ve learned a consistent skincare routine is key and that patience is required. Improvements or changes in skin health takes time.

Sustainability is a big part of your story; tell us how.

Environmental impact is a huge focus for Dear Lucy. Through the development process, the more I learned about manufacturing and production, the more I struggled to believe a truly sustainable consumer packaged goods product exists. I then shifted my goal to being more sustainable, the most I could be. This involves asking questions and choosing options that are least harmful. These decisions are not always the easiest or quickest in the moment but as we look to the future, they will save us. Every element of the product considers where we can have the most meaningful impact. From local production to selecting innovative biotech ingredients, sustainability is a core value. Every decision in our development, testing and production supports our goal to make the most sustainable luxury skincare product possible.

What’s next for Dear Lucy?

Currently, my focus is on the launch of our Marine Antioxidant Serum. It’s tempting to jump straight into developing the next big thing, but I want to make sure that everything we offer to our customers is top-notch. Skincare is self care, so each product we create must feel luxurious and indulgent while still aligning with our minimalist concept and dedication to sustainability. My goal is to create multifunctional products that make life simpler and allow our customers to buy and use less. Testing and ensuring the efficacy of our products is important to me and it may take a bit of patience (from formulation testing through clinical trials, Marine Antioxidant Serum testing took 20 months) but I believe it’s worth it in the end. For now, I’m putting all my energy into our Marine Antioxidant Serum launch, but Dear Lucy has more exciting things in the pipeline that I can’t wait to share!
