Do you know what eye irritation and airway inflammation have in common? They are both caused by air pollution. Indoor air is about four times more polluted than outdoor air. With the arrival of spring, Dupray launches its new invention to remedy this problem: Bloom, an air purifier that beautifies the space and improves the quality of indoor air. Plus, it’s stylish enough to complement your home décor and will be available to purchase very soon! We chatted with Dupray co-founders Sébastien and Brent to learn more. —Noa Nichol
Hello Sébastien and Brent! Please tell us a bit about yourselves to start.
We’ve been best friends, and entrepreneurs, for the last 15 years. We got the inspiration to launch our first business together after watching an episode of the Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs”. We launched a specialized cleaning business scrubbing chewing gum, litter, and graffiti from the streets of Montreal. It was a lot of hard work, but we learned pretty much everything there is to know about the power of steam cleaning. Eventually, we decided to expand our business to design, manufacture and sell the steam cleaners. It wasn’t long before we had developed an extensive line of products including steam cleaners, clothes steamers (and now our first air purifier!) to be sold across the world. We have customers across the U.S., Canada and Europe. We’re both really proud of how far the business has come, and excited about where it will take us in the future.
When and why did you launch Dupray?
We launched Dupray back in 2008. It originally started as a steam cleaning business, and we had a lot of big clients in and around Montreal (including the STM, our public transit provider). We used commercial-grade steam cleaners to clean gum, graffiti and dirt from public spaces around the city. From that experience, we started developing our line of residential and commercial steam cleaners – because steam cleaning is something anyone can benefit from.
Eventually, we started thinking of other ways customers could sanitize their space and, when we looked at what existed on the market for air purifiers, we realized there was room for something way more innovative and aesthetically pleasing. That’s how the idea for Bloom™ was born!
What niche were/are you aiming to fill?
We wanted to create an air purifier that would not only remove harmful pollutants from the air, but would also look good in the customer’s home. Most air purifiers are bulky machines that no one really wants to look at, or display in their homes. We designed Bloom™ to be both stylish and functional, that’s why it really stands out from the rest.
What products/services do you offer, and what makes them unique?
We offer an extensive range of residential and commercial appliances including steam cleaners, clothes steamers and, now, our revolutionary Bloom™ Air Purifier. Our products are unique because of their sleek designs and user-friendly functionalities. We want to simplify the lives of our customers while providing some very real benefits for their overall quality of life. Our products offer ecological solutions for sanitization because they use zero chemicals. They are totally safe for everyone, and they look great too!
Congratulations on the launch of your new air purifier, Bloom! What makes it different from other air purifiers out there?
Thank you! Bloom™ is really different from other air purifiers because of its design and its advanced features. You can use Bloom™ as a planter to grow your favourite plant, or you can add a wood tabletop to make it an accent table. Either way, Bloom™ uses medical-grade HEPA-13 filtration to remove 99.97% of air pollutants such as dust, bacteria, smoke, airborne particles from wildfires, VOCs, pollen, pet dander, allergens, mold, odors.
Bloom™ also features a convenient AUTO mode, so you can just set it and forget it – knowing it will continuously monitor the air quality and automatically adjust its fan speed accordingly. There is even a NIGHT mode for ultra-quiet air filtration at night. We tried to think of everything that would make this air purifier a subtle and pleasing addition to anyone’s space.
In terms of its benefits, how does Bloom work and how can it contribute to our health at home?
Bloom™ features 360° air intake/outlet for optimal air circulation. It pulls pollutants (as small as 0.1 micron in size) out of the air you breathe. The 3-stage filtration ensures all particles are removed, no matter how small. Bloom™’s pre-filter is treated with BioSilver™ ions for antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal properties. The pre-filter captures larger particles in the air, which in turn prolongs the life of the HEPA filter inside.
By removing these harmful air pollutants, the quality of air you breathe is drastically improved. This is obviously beneficial for anyone who suffers from allergies or asthma, but cleaner air is good for absolutely everyone. There are numerous benefits including improved sleep quality, reduced chance of illness due to airborne bacteria and viruses, reduced exposure to mold, VOCs and unpleasant odors. Clean air just feels really, really good.
Aesthetically, this is a beautiful purifier, and we hear it can also be used as a decorative planter or coffee table?! What went into its design?
Yes! We are really proud of the unique design. We worked with a team of engineers at the University of Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Spain to develop the perfect design and functionality for Bloom™. We wanted to combine quality air purification with the beauty of plants, so we created an integrated planter and root strainer directly inside Bloom™. For anyone who doesn’t want to grow a plant, we also built a stylish accent table option. Bloom™ works for anyone and can easily blend into any decor.
With 13 different colours to choose from, what’s each of your favourite hues?
Oooh! That’s a tough one! I’d have to say Caramel. (Sébastien).
I think it would be Burgundy for me (Brent).
