When it comes to summer must-haves, hats surely top the list. Not only do they provide you with much-needed sun protection, they can add so much style to even the simplest of outfits. A pair of denim cutoff shorts and a white tank will look infinitely more stylish with a cool cap. That simple linen dress will look chic with a straw visor. Or, play up a brightly hued dress with a fun and playful pom-pom hat. If you are looking to curate a little hat collection for yourself, here are a few ideas to get you started. —Jen Pistor
- Straw Visor from Value Village : Never did I ever think I would wear a visor, but when I saw this oversized beauty, in brand new condition, hanging there at the thrift store, I knew I had to give it a try. Visors have come back on the scene in a big way this Summer and the thrift stores are loaded with some amazing options.
- Bucket Hat from Vancouver Designer Connally Mcdougall : This fabulous, oversized bucket hat is one of the first I have found that actually works well with my bangs. The wide brim can be flipped up a bit in front for style, versatility, or to accommodate bangs. The long ties give the hat a full fashion feel. The hat is made of an organic cotton canvas and retails for $28 CAD. Also available in an Unbleached Cotton Canvas.
- Fun Fedora from Value Village : I bought this hat in brand new condition from the thrift shop. It is an instant pop of whimsy and fun and looks amazing paired with more colour.
- Ball Cap from Poshmark : I bought this NY Cap in brand new condition from Poshmark last Summer. It’s a clean and classic design and the muted tones lend it to be paired with almost anything in your wardrobe.

A couple of tips when it comes to thrifting a hat:
- Be prepared to look through the whole rack. The hats get stacked on top of each other and only by slowly going through the racks can you find the quality ones.
- Check for visible signs of wear. Is there makeup or sweat stains on the inner brim? Are there any snags, flaws, or broken bits?
- Feel around all the different parts of the hat. I picked up a very cute bucket hat and when I opened it to check out the inside, the inner fabric turned to dust. That was a new experience for me. Not all items that get put out are in resale condition.
- Give the hat a sniff. Yes, you heard me. Try smelling the hat. This visor was in new like condition. No unpleasant odours, it simply smelled of straw. Other hats can smell musty if they have been worn a lot. Perspiration odours and other foul smells can linger in a hat, and I doubt you want that on your head.
- When shopping on secondhand apps like Poshmark, you can often find items in brand new or new like condition.
