This Coat (Sorta) Got Sent To Outer Space

February 22, 2024

On February 15, Columbia Sportwear watched as its Omni-Heat Infinity technology played a role in a historic moment for U.S. lunar travel, insulating Intuitive Machine’s Nova-C lander against the extreme temperatures of space through a scientific partnership between the two companies.

The learnings from this scientific partnership have already resulted in new products including the Arch Rock Double Wall Elite jacket. Columbia has experimented with space blanket technology since they debuted Omni-Heat in 2010, and now in its third iteration, Omni-Heat Infinity is bringing the evolution of the technology full circle.

Featured in more than 100 Columbia products, the heat-reflective materials used to keep people warm is built from the same basic components as the multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets used to protect parts of the spacecraft. As most of the country is being impacted by extreme weather this winter, thoughtfully crafted products that can withstand the cold are essential.

Now that’s what we call inter-galactic outer-wear! —Vita Daily
