Underwear as daywear is hardly a new concept. This season, the undergarment of choice is the bloomer.
Similar in silhouette to the also popular, bubble skirt, bloomers are essentially a voluminous short. Brought into fashion in the 1800s as a more comfortable option for women’s undergarments, the bloomer has long been a symbol of women’s rights and freedom. In 2024, the shorts come in various styles from short, to long, with more, or less volume and with various decorations: bows, frills, eyelets, or pleats.
With the rise of feminine aesthetics like coquette and girlhood core and on the heels of the 2023 Barbie movie it’s no surprise that the garment rooted in feminist history has risen in popularity, making its way into 2024 street style.

Um…..I was alive during the “bloomer” era….and lived in Winnipeg,Manitoba. The real bloomers were of thicker material and long, almost long enough to the knees. Kept us warm all winter.
