Canadian toxin-free cleaning brand The Bare Home has just launched its brand new, personal care line! We chatted with founder Ashley James to learn more, and to give you a chance to win!

What inspired you to expand The Bare Home’s product line to include personal care items like shave bars, shampoo & conditioner bars, and body & hand bars?

The expansion to personal care was a natural evolution of The Bare Home brand. Ultimately, we want to help people remove toxins and reduce waste in simple ways from their homes and away from people they care about. For the personal care line, the jumping-off point came from my desire to find a shave bar that didn’t irritate my skin. I couldn’t find it, so I made it. Over many months and multiple formulations, we finally found the right combination that includes sodium lactate as a proven natural agent to reduce irritation and burning. Being able to offer a holistic approach to sustainable living extends our commitment to the environment and health in every aspect of daily life.

Can you tell us more about the development process for your three signature essential oil-based scents: Bergamot + Lime, Blood Orange + Bergamot + Sandalwood, and Lavender + Sage?

Given our commitment to developing toxin-free solutions, we knew from the start that we would only use pure essential oils in our products. As a migraine sufferer and sensitive to scent, I know how impactful fragrance can be. Fragrance oils, commonly used in many products, contain synthetic chemicals like phthalates and parabens that are known to be quite toxic and are endocrine disruptors. This can interfere with hormonal regulation, leading to reproductive problems, developmental and immune issues and has most recently been linked to certain cancers. Additionally, these fragrances can cause allergic reactions, skin irritations and respiratory issues.

But we know people connect to scent; they’re proven to elevate mood, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. It can be energizing, relaxing and everything in between. So, we needed to find a meaningful line-up that reflects the experience we want to help people create when they connect with The Bare Home products. We worked closely with expert aromatherapists and spent countless hours testing different non-toxic combinations. In the end, we landed on a simple collection of three scents that all our products are available. First off, Bergamot + Lime is energizing,  refreshing and uplifting. Our Blood Orange + Bergamot + Sandalwood scent is designed to be grounding and calming, and also help regulate the nervous system. Our most popular scent, Lavender + Sage, is soothing, relaxing and oh-so cozy.

How do your personal care products align with The Bare Home’s commitment to toxin-free, biodegradable, and reduced packaging principles?

Everything we ever do has to tick these boxes. Earlier this year, we finally received our B Corp certification, which was a long, meaningful process and a personal and company goal. For our customers, we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. We ensure all our products are made with safe ingredients for people and the environment. Our formulas are biodegradable, which means they break down naturally without causing harm to ecosystems as they go down the drain. We’ve prioritized reduced packaging by using minimal, recyclable, and compostable materials to help minimize our environmental footprint and support our mission to promote sustainability in every aspect of our business. The B Corp certification highlights our dedication to our customers and validates our efforts to create effective and environmentally responsible products, which feels really important. 

What challenges did you face in creating products that are both effective and nourishing while also being zero irritation and using clean ingredients?

Well, a LOT of trial and error! Finding the right balance between cleanliness, efficacy and gentleness required extensive research and development. We encountered obstacles like sourcing high-quality natural ingredients and developed formulations that deliver tangible results. We overcame these challenges through rigorous testing, feedback from our community and collaboration with experts in natural skincare. Our commitment to transparency and quality has been paramount in overcoming these hurdles, ensuring that our products are safe, effective, gentle on the skin and, of course, 100% toxin-free.

How do you envision The Bare Home’s new personal care line impacting the market for sustainable and toxin-free products in Canada and beyond?

Let’s face it, the world is increasingly aware of the harmful toxins in personal care and household cleaning products. People are looking for simple and effective ways to eliminate these toxins from their lives. Our new personal care line is clean and effective, marking the beginning of something positive for those striving to live a cleaner lifestyle. We’re making a significant impact on the market for sustainable and toxin-free products in Canada and the United States, and bringing more good to more people is our long-term goal. Our hope? To set a new benchmark for sustainability in our industry by offering high-quality, beneficial personal care items that adhere to our strict environmental and health standards. Our goal is to empower consumers to make conscious choices and honestly, to inspire other brands to adopt similar practices that care for people and the environment. We believe our personal care line will enhance our customers’ daily lives and contribute to a larger movement toward a more sustainable and toxin-free future.
