In the world of makeup artistry, few names shine as brightly as Mario Dedivanovic, the CEO and Founder of Makeup by Mario and mastermind behind Kim Kardashian’s iconic looks. I had the privilege of attending the first-ever Canadian makeup masterclass hosted by Sephora and taught by Dedivanovic, where he unveiled his secrets to achieving a flawless, natural look and discussed his signature sculptured, natural contour technique. Here are five tips I learned from this masterclass to help elevate makeup. —Farah Khan
Sculpt the Inner Eye Area for Enhanced Dimension
Sculpt the inner corner of your eye and nose, upwards towards the eyebrow with eyeshadow to help create dimension. This technique also helps anchor your eyes to your face. By enhancing this area, you can achieve a cohesive look that prevents your eyes from appearing “floating”—a term Mario used.

For Hooded Eyes: Apply Eyeliner Underneath The Lash Line
For those with hooded eyes, traditional eyeliner on top of the tip can compromise lid space. Instead, try applying eyeliner beneath the lashes. This technique not only preserves your eyelid space but also creates a more defined look that enhances your natural eye shape.

Achieve Natural Lifted Brows with Powder
After you’ve applied the initial brow pencil in the very beginning, use brow gel to set the hair, then follow up with eyebrow powder at the end, applying it in an upward motion. This method gives a natural look and ensures that the brow gel stays intact. Avoid using a brow pencil again to fill in any gaps, which can scrape away the gel.

Strategic Lip Liner on Bottom for a Lift
The placement of lip liner can significantly affect the overall look of your face. By keeping the liner within the natural lip line of your bottom lip, you can create a more youthful and lifted effect. Overlining the bottom lip can lead to a drooping appearance, so this subtle adjustment can make a big difference.

Less is More
When it comes to makeup application, self restraint is key according to Mario. Applying products conservatively allows for a more polished look. You can always build up intensity, whether it’s blush, eyeliner, or brow color, ensuring you achieve your desired effect without looking cakey. Always finish off with a setting spray to allow the makeup to settle.
