February 6, 2025

Made in Canada

Supporting Canadian fashion brands is more important than ever, so when I was asked to put together my edit of favourites I jumped at the chance. As a stylist and overall “fashion person” it was naturally quite hard to narrow it down, but as someone who is on the front lines of the style sphere I wanted to share great Canadian brands I wear, admire, or have that international flair. I set my parameters to fashion, as I could have easily done a second list, not to mention one for jewellery and accessories too.  So without further adieu here is my personal edit of Canadian fashion brands to discover, shop, or follow. —Lauren Walker-Lee

Beaufille

Known for understated luxury,  effortless designs, and incredible tailoring, the word Beaufille translates to ‘handsome girl’ and symbolizes the contrast between masculine and feminine elements. The combination of hard and soft is seen in the brand’s fabrics and silhouettes, resulting in the ultimate juxtaposition for personal style. You will undoubtedly be stopped in the street wearing Beaufille resulting in a large ‘Wishlist’ – a hazard of falling in love with the brand.

Ashley Rowe

Ashley Rowe’s oversized, boxy silhouettes redefine minimalism with a raw, unpolished energy. The brand’s commitment to slow fashion is evident in its use of dead stock textiles and a pared-down colour palette. The oversized Turtlenecks are a brand staple and if you happen to have the first edition denim version from the designer’s time in Marfa Texas consider yourself way ahead of the trend.

Golshaah

Fashion with a capital F,  Golshaah creates poetic and architectural pieces that are straight out of a fashion capital. Fashion designer Golnar has far reaching talent and creates inspiring clothing with beautiful fabrications and silhouettes. These wearable art pieces are treasures to add to your wardrobe.

KOTN

A great Canadian success story, KOTN built their brand on ethical production and quality essentials. Delivering elevated basics crafted from Egyptian cotton they have created an incredible alternative to fast fashion (with rejoicing Canadians). With a focus on fair wages and sustainability, the brand reinvests in the communities where its materials are sourced. I knew my job was done when my husband found his new favourite for his minimalist sensibilities.

Left On Friday

Designed for movement and style, Left On Friday specializes in sleek, technical swimwear and activewear. The brand’s signature buttery-soft fabric and bold colour- ways make it a go-to for beach goers and adventurers. The mixing and matching of styles and unique colour combinations makes for something totally unique to you. It was thrilling to see this independent brand outfit the women’s volleyball players at the summer Olympics.

Ste Marg Scot

Canadian outerwear got a whole lot brighter when SteMargScot entered the chat. Founded by Sasha Jardine, the woolen outerwear brand creates exceptional pieces in a rainbow of colours. Rooted in local craftsmanship and the renewable resource of wool, the coats are modern heirlooms to be passed down for generations.

Eliza Faulkner

Playful yet sophisticated, Montreal designer Eliza Faulkner is known for her voluminous silhouettes, puffed sleeves, and mood-boosting hues. The brand’s locally made designs make it a favourite of slow fashion enthusiasts who want something that no one else will have. There is a cool Scandinavian edge to the collection that offers great fabric mixing and pieces to wear cross seasonally.Check out her twist on the traditional workwear jacket in the colour toffee.

Mary Young

Redefining lingerie and loungewear, Mary Young embraces body positivity with soft, wire-free intimates. Prioritizing ethical production and comfort, the brand’s pieces celebrate self-expression and confidence. Founded in 2014, Mary Young wanted to fill the gap and create a community for everybody. The Mesh collection is so special, offering the wearer sensuality, style and confidence. Plus a little secret for under your clothes.

Uncle Studios

Co- founded by content creator Allegra Shaw and partner Shirin Soltani, Uncle Studios blends laid-back luxury and conscious design, resulting in effortless wardrobe staples for today’s multifaceted lifestyle. The eco -conscious brand has just opened their flagship store on Ossington, perfectly placing them amongst the hip and happening to snap up their cool girl aesthetic.

Wanze Song

If You Know You Know! An absolute rising star in the Canadian design scene. WANZE focuses on innovative patterning and considered functionality to create compelling garments for the everyday. Using high quality and dead stock materials sourced from Italy and Japan, the brand does all garment patterning in house in Toronto. The unexpected twists on the traditional make for exciting and wearable pieces for both men and women that are understatedly chic, easy and tailored to perfection.
