Few places represent paradise quite like Australia’s Whitsundays—crystal-blue water, white sandy beaches, and endless sunshine abound at these Queensland islands on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef.
Leading the pack in the luxury category is InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef by IHG, a sprawling and storied property on the private Hayman Island. The experience begins the moment guests arrive at the intimate Hamilton Island Airport—hotel visitors are escorted onto a branded boat where champagne and snacks are served on the one-hour journey. Of note, the only other way to access the InterContinental is via private helicopter, keeping this gem ultra-exclusive. The boat ride alone is worth the trip, with views so iconic you have to remind yourself they are, in fact, real.
Arriving at the resort feels very White Lotus—in all the best ways—with a group of friendly staff greeting guests as they disembark for their once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
The resort—originally named the Royal Hayman Hotel—was built in the 1950s by Ansett Transport Industries, a now-defunct airline based in Melbourne. While parts of the hotel are now 75 years old, you’d never know it thanks to impeccable maintenance and modern updates that reportedly cost upwards of $135 million.
With 182 guest rooms, the InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef is a spacious retreat—it could be completely booked, but you’d never know (until you try to get a dinner reservation). Forty-six rooms occupy The Pool Wing, made up of a combination of one- and two-bedroom suites overlooking the iconic Hayman Pool—also known as the largest pool in Australia. Ground-floor rooms offer swim-out access directly from their private patios.
The One Bedroom Ocean View Pool Suite was a delight, with sweeping views of the crystal-blue ocean, the resort itself, and—off in the distance—the larger Hayman Residences nestled into the hills. Spa-inspired bathrooms with double vanities, a clawfoot tub, and Byredo toiletries made in-room indulgence non-negotiable, while the separate bedroom and open-concept living and dining area eliminated any sense of confinement. If anything, the suite felt like a home away from home—only a much swankier one. The resort leans into a minimalist, modern aesthetic—a style echoed throughout the rooms, right down to the cozy king-size canopy bed.
The shining star of this property, however, is the infinity pool adjacent to The Lagoon Wing. Nothing quite says contemporary elegance like this gorgeous corner of the resort, which offers a picture-perfect view of pristine emerald water, framed by palm trees and—weather permitting—bright blue skies. Poolside cabanas surround the heavenly oasis, while beach access is just steps away, offering guests the best of both worlds.
Experiences are the primary reason many guests come to this property, particularly to snorkel the legendary Great Barrier Reef. The hotel offers plenty of options for every level of adventurer, including private charter boats to explore North Queensland’s immaculate marine life. Excursions to Langford Island, Bali Hai Reef, and Blue Pearl Bay North are also on the docket, alongside sunset cruises and jet ski tours. The property itself is surrounded by lush greenery, so even if you don’t venture out, you’re still immersed in the natural beauty of Hayman Island.
When it comes to dining, the resort doesn’t disappoint. Start your day with the lavish breakfast buffet, featuring an array of Western and Aussie classics (the waffles are a must), as well as some Asian-inspired selections. For lunch and dinner, our go-to was the Italian-themed Amici—don’t miss the woodfired pizzas and bolognese. Pan-Asian cuisine is on the menu at Bam Bam, which offers a daily fresh fish selection, while the hotel’s signature dining experience is the seafood-forward Pacific. Our main advice: make reservations in advance to avoid disappointment.
For those seeking a little extra TLC, the on-site spa and salon is not to be missed. Complimentary 30-minute meditations are offered alongside treatments, which include facials by buzzy British brand Elemis, as well as a variety of body therapies. The Hayman Signature Experience for One includes access to the Hayman Spa Bamboo Loft with your own bath and steam room, followed by full-body exfoliation, steam therapy, and a signature massage.
The InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef by IHG is the ideal escape for anyone looking to unwind on an Australian adventure—perfect for both couples and families alike. —Cassie Gill
