My 13-year-old Eureka AirSpeed AS1000AE upright has served me very well since I purchased it at the London Drugs in Kitsilano in mid-2012. Since then, it’s been through two moves (including a long-distance one, 1000+ km from Vancouver), lost a few important parts (the telescopic attachment to reach further, the frame to curl the hose across the back, and the angled funnel attachment, meant to get into tight corners), and unfortunately put the fear of God into two cats (as well as a neighbour’s) every time they even 𝘴𝘦𝘦 the vacuum brought out. (Sadly, my Kitsilano girl, Mushu, passed away from aggressive, high-grade G.I. lymphoma last June, at almost 13 years💔 I adopted a new girl, Amarissa, seven weeks later.)
The Eureka is bulky, heavier than necessary, NOISY, and with only ONE closet in my 600 sq. ft. apartment (with wall-to-wall flooring and a few area rugs), takes up a fair amount of closet space with its more cumbersome frame. The Eureka didn’t come with an attachment to vacuum floors (the flat kind that lays flush against flooring), and when I bought it 13 years ago, such an attachment didn’t seem necessary because my Kitsilano apartment (with three closets) had mostly low-pile carpet that that powerful brush head and suction cleaned masterfully! Now, with wall-to-wall flooring in my current place of five years, I’ve noticed that the Eureka’s powerful brushhead doesn’t have a setting low enough to SWEEP or LIFT smaller particles from floors. Instead, the oscillating brushhead spins the small pieces, then sends them shooting out the back of the brushhead, scattering little pieces of cat litter, crumbs, and other particles everywhere, requiring more work to clean from the floors AFTER putting away the vacuum!
Due to the Eureka’s age, it has become more challenging to find replacement filters, and, of course, replacements for the lost accessory parts cost more to replace than the brand-new Eureka did when purchased for under $200 in 2012! I can’t afford to replace any of them (or the unit itself) right now, as I’m still trying to recover from last year’s heartbreaking vet bills, and found out (in December) that my new cat has stress-related Pandora Syndrome and FIC, requiring prescription food ($86/bag—likely more now, with tariffs) and more frequent veterinary care to address and treat flare-ups if/when they occur.😾 I’ve noticed that she seems to use the litterbox more frequently after I’ve put away the loud, cumbersome, scary Eureka vacuum.
Having viewed some YouTube clips about the Rowenta X-Force Flex 15.60, I’ve admired its versatile design, but even more so, its lower-decibel noise output! 🤫 The Rowenta can be stored discreetly on a WALL, is cordless, has a WASHABLE filter (yay! no more trying to find new, replacement filters, or wasting money on new ones, adding waste to landfill when replacing old ones!), a crevice nozzle, an LED guided brushhead, an Animal TURBO brush, and will lay flush against flooring, to pick up small particles!😻
Could a more 𝓹𝓾𝓻𝓻fect vacuum cleaner exist?!
