Separates have become a huge thing in the wedding world and offer both a fresh fashion perspective and easy way to create a bespoke bridal look. If you love the idea of mixing and matching tops and bottoms, wedding day separates allow you to create the ultimate ‘fit. The two-piece trend is one bridal designers are having a ton of fun with too.
“Separates come with a more playful mood because you are able to express your personality and style in a low-pressure way,” says Canadian designer Catherine Langlois who launched the first lineup of her popular WildHoney collection of bridal separates in 2020. “I love the endless options that can be created. A formal corset with a ballgown skirt can morph into a party outfit by adding a mini skirt or shorts. A simple flared skirt can be shortened to wear again. Trousers can be worn after the wedding, out for dinner during a honeymoon or anniversary date.”
Langlois says pants in particular are having a moment this wedding season and she is currently creating many cool styles for brides in her Toronto studio. “I am making palazzo pants, Yves Saint Laurent-inspired tuxedo pants, pleated tapered trousers, slim-cut ankle length pants, and jumpsuits made to be worn with a train or corset,” Langlois says. “These pant styles are being paired with everything from corsets, to crop tops and lace or organza toppers.”
Choosing to wear separates on your wedding day not only looks chic, but can be a very savvy spend. As Langlois explains it, having something like a custom pair of trousers or skirt created for your is making an investment in your occasion dressing wardrobe. “These are pieces you will definitely re-wear. I design my pieces in an invincible Canadian-sourced crepe with 10 percent Lycra that’s hand washable and very hard wearing. Combined with a solid stretch lining, these separates can be worn over and over again.”
Langlois currently has two WildHoney collections of wedding separates and aims to release a third one by the end of the year. She says though separates are not necessarily a fit for every bride, they are perfect if you want something non-traditional and have a less formal and intimate wedding. She reports she has many same-sex couples who love her separates because they offer an option between a classic suit and a dress and still say bride without the fuss. She also loves that her separates offer a gender-neutral option.
“When I first introduced my separates five years ago during the pandemic it was during a time I felt weddings were going to change in a big way and I wanted to share my design voice,” Langlois says. “I felt the concept could be pushed into a more fashion-forward and gender neutral way. I am so happy the concept is taking off.”—Alison McGill
