Something big is happening on the trails this summer—literally. Kathmandu, Australasia’s leading outdoor brand, is making its Canadian debut in a bold way: by attempting to break a Guinness World Record for the most people hiking simultaneously. The brand’s first official event in Canada, Kathmandu World’s Biggest Hike, is set for Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Vancouver’s Cypress Mountain, with the goal of gathering up to 2,000 hikers for one unforgettable adventure.
Founded in New Zealand in 1987 and known for its high-performance, sustainable apparel and gear, Kathmandu has built its legacy on the belief that time spent outside makes life better. Now available across Canada (including at MEC and via kathmanduoutdoor.ca), the brand is celebrating its local arrival by encouraging Canadians to do what they do best—get outside and embrace the great outdoors.
“At Kathmandu, we believe outside is where we live our best lives,” says Nick Russell, General Manager of KMD Brands Canada. “This event is about so much more than breaking a record—it’s about inspiring people to reconnect with nature, support their communities, and experience the physical and mental health benefits of being in the wild.”
Taking place in the scenic Cypress Provincial Park, on the traditional and unceded territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam Nations, the hike spans four kilometres of moderate terrain, climbing from the base to the top of the Sky Chair. Along the way, participants will enjoy breathtaking vistas, community vibes, music, and vendor experiences at the base. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase, making the day a full-on celebration of nature, movement, and connection.
Best of all, the hike gives back. Proceeds from event merch—including limited-edition t-shirts and water bottles—will support local nonprofit partners: BC Parks Foundation, North Shore Rescue, and the Take a Hike Foundation. It’s outdoor adventure with heart.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for an epic new way to experience BC’s natural beauty, this is your chance to be part of something record-breaking—and meaningful.
