When you think of Canadian wildlife, a meat-eating plant probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But thanks to a recent Telly Award win, one tiny botanical predator is getting its moment in the spotlight—and proving that even the quietest corners of our ecosystems are bursting with wonder.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Hinterland Who’s Who series—yes, that nostalgic national treasure—just scooped a 2025 Telly Award for its beautifully crafted video on the Round-leaved Sundew, a shy-but-deadly little plant that thrives in Canada’s nutrient-poor peatlands. Produced by SandBay Entertainment, the PSA took home the prize in the Branded Content – Nature & Wildlife category, standing shoulder to shoulder with global media heavyweights.

“This recognition places Hinterland Who’s Who in the company of some of the world’s most respected content creators,” said Sean Southey, CEO of the Canadian Wildlife Federation. “It’s incredibly gratifying to see our commitment to celebrating Canada’s biodiversity reflected on a global stage.”

With sticky, glistening leaves that lure in unsuspecting insects and a slow-motion digestion process that would make a Venus flytrap jealous, the Round-leaved Sundew is as captivating as it is underrated. “It may be small, but it’s mighty,” said Amanda Barakat, producer at SandBay. “And this story really resonated with audiences.”

Filmed in the Ottawa region, the award-winning vignette is a perfect blend of stunning visuals, fun facts, and heartfelt storytelling—hallmarks of the Hinterland Who’s Who brand since its black-and-white TV debut in 1963. And according to the Honourable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the win is a reminder of how powerful storytelling can be in protecting our most precious natural spaces. “This PSA is a beautiful reminder of the importance of Canada’s wetlands and the extraordinary life they sustain.”

The Hinterland Who’s Who series continues to educate and inspire a new generation of nature lovers with upcoming episodes featuring species like the Pileated Woodpecker, the Saw-whet Owl, the Western Red Cedar, the Bald Eagle, and—wait for it—the Green Banana Slug (you’re going to want to tune in for that one).

Window box planters offer a simple way to bring greenery into small spaces, making them ideal for apartments and compact homes. They attach neatly beneath windows or along balcony railings, creating vibrant displays of flowers, herbs, or even vegetables. By using vertical space, they maximize planting areas while enhancing a building’s appearance and charm. https://idealistplanters.co.uk/catalogue/outdoor_planters/window_boxes/ These planters also improve air quality and provide a calming connection to nature, making them both decorative and practical additions for modern living environments.
