When the world shut down in 2020, so did the lives of countless professionals, including filmmaker Kelsey Irvine and her sister, Lindsay. But what might have been an ending became a remarkable beginning. Together with their mother, the sisters reimagined their mom’s passion project, Birch Babe, transforming it into one of Canada’s fastest-growing clean beauty brands—all while staying true to their values of family, sustainability, and authenticity.
“The pandemic rebuilt our lives right in front of us,” recalls Kelsey. “I was working as a commercial director, and my job disappeared overnight, while my sister’s career in hospitality management vanished with the industry shutdown. Rebranding Birch Babe for our mom started as a labour of love, something nice to do for her while we had time on our hands. It was never intended to become a ‘big brand,’ and that’s what makes it feel so special and authentic.”
Clean Beauty Without Compromise
From the beginning, Birch Babe has been about more than products. It’s about accessibility and integrity. Every product is certified all-natural, vegan, cruelty-free, and plastic-free, made with sustainability as the baseline, not a bonus.
“Birch Babe started with a simple mission, to make healthier skincare and elevated everyday essentials accessible to as many people as possible,” says Kelsey. “We’ve always believed clean beauty shouldn’t feel exclusive or out of reach.”
The key to keeping prices approachable while maintaining ethical sourcing? In-house formulation and production. “Unlike many brands that outsource to third-party labs with pre-existing formulas, we own all of our formulations,” Kelsey explains. “That gives us full control over quality and allows us to offer products at an approachable price point.”
Packaging, too, reflects this ethos: glass and aluminum containers, 100% recycled kraft paper, and refillable options online and in-store.
Growth on Their Own Terms
Birch Babe’s growth story reads like a case study in modern entrepreneurship: from 30 stores to more than 300 across North America in just three years. And they did it without traditional investors.
“In the early days, retailers reached out to us directly after discovering us on social media,” says Kelsey. “That momentum showed us the power of authentic word of mouth.”
Even when financing eventually came from BDC and Community Futures, the team maintained 100% ownership. “It’s steady, intentional growth that ensures we continue to own our story and direction,” she notes. That growth—120% in the past year—has brought Birch Babe to major retailers like Whole Foods and Sobeys, while keeping its Canadian identity firmly intact.
Proudly Made in Canada
For Birch Babe, local production is more than a point of pride—it’s the brand’s foundation. “Birch Babe is rooted in family values, integrity, and health. It began with our mom making safe, sustainable skincare for our family and friends, and today, we see our customers as an extension of that family,” says Kelsey.
Producing in Canada also allows for visibility at every stage, from sourcing to testing, while creating local jobs. Earlier this year, Birch Babe opened its first storefront in their hometown of Northbrook, Ontario, which has become a destination for fans and a hub for community connection.
A Family-Run Business With a Shared Vision
The company’s leadership structure reflects its grassroots beginnings: three women, three generations, three perspectives. “My mom is our formulator, my sister Lindsay is our COO running operations, and I’ve stepped into the role of CEO, focusing on vision and growth,” Kelsey explains.
Working as a family isn’t without its challenges, but it’s also what makes Birch Babe unique. “We challenge each other constantly, but that means our decisions are deeply considered,” she says. “Having three leaders at the table also makes decision-making smoother—we’ve leaned into a majority-rules approach. You don’t always get exactly what you want, but collectively, we’re always able to move things forward.”
Challenging Clean Beauty Misconceptions
One of Birch Babe’s missions is to strip away the exclusivity often associated with clean beauty. “I think clean beauty has often been built around expensive products and 10-step routines,” Kelsey says. “At Birch Babe, we’re all about high-quality skincare for the low-maintenance babe. The routines we recommend are under four steps and take less than five minutes, while still delivering superior quality and results.”
Lessons in Storytelling
A pivotal moment for the brand came after their 2023 rebrand, when sales temporarily dipped. “That’s when we realized brand values can’t be sold, they need to be shared,” Kelsey reflects. “We began telling our origin story more openly online, at trade shows, and to anyone who would listen. That small shift fueled over 120% growth in the last year.”
Hero Products and What’s Next
For travel or daily simplicity, Kelsey swears by the LTB Bundle, which includes Birch Babe’s Gentle Face Scrub, Vitamin C Serum, and Hydrating Face Cream. “It’s my go-to trio for keeping skin smooth and glowing,” she says. She also highlights the Natural Glow Face Serum (“sometimes it’s the only product I’ll bring to a workout class or on a plane”) and the Glowing Body Oil in Vanilla.
Looking ahead, Birch Babe is preparing to launch what Kelsey calls their most exciting innovation yet: a 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40+. “This elevated version rubs in 99% clear, is non-comedogenic, marine safe, water-resistant, and gentle enough for babies,” she says. “It’s packaged in a 100% compostable, travel-friendly tube, formulated in-house by our mom, and made right here in Ontario. This one’s a big deal for us.”
The Birch Babe Way
From a small-batch passion project to a nationally recognized clean beauty brand, Birch Babe’s story is proof that family-led businesses can thrive without sacrificing authenticity. As Kelsey puts it: “That experience reshaped how we define success. It proved to us that a brand can be family-led, women-led, and still build something powerful, without compromising.” —Noa Nichol
