It’s autumn. We need a change of scenery, and a hotel that rotates its offerings, so we get the most out of our stay … cation. The Fairmont Waterfront delivers.
Even though I’m a local, it feels like I’ve just seen downtown Vancouver’s Fairmont Waterfront Hotel with fresh eyes. A luxury hotel I’ve taken for granted as always being there for tourists hopping off their cruise ships across the street at Canada Place, or for throngs of businesspeople gathering at the Convention Centre—but after a recent stay I can honestly say, I’d recommend this as a staycation spot for locals in a heartbeat.
It’s so easy to forget that the Fairmont Waterfront is situated on absolutely primo city property. Look left and you can stroll the Coal Harbour Seawall; look right and you’re shopping in historic Gastown. And the pano-view from my guestroom? Sweeping, stunning, and that captures the North Shore Mountains, Stanley Park and Vancouver harbour like a massive mural, beautifully changing colour and shape as the sun moved around the day.
Fairmont Waterfront is known for their wellness programs, dialed into guests seeking sanctuary, and not just a typical hotel stay. That same guest is often an experience-aficionado, looking for mindful, soulful offerings, beyond just at the property, to enhance their few days of hotel-life as well.
From now until March 2026, the hotel hosts a guided run every Tuesday and Thursday morning along Vancouver’s seawall, while Wednesdays Yoga, Stretching & Sound Meditation slow things way down with Tianne Allan, yoga teacher and sound healer with over 20 years of experience and a seriously healing teaching vibe.
ALL members can borrow complimentary fitness wear, including sneakers, through the Fairmont Fit program, and use of the rooftop pool, open daily and heated throughout the year. Complimentary cruiser bikes and BMW chauffeured drives make getting around easier too.
Say omm. Followed by yumm. Love the sounds of Candlelit Soundscapes & Supper, an evening of self-care that starts with a candlelit sound bath meditation followed by a quiet dinner at ARC Restaurant to enjoy the seasonally changing signature Province to Plate menu. Check the calendar for dates.
We all know the benefits of cryotherapy, and braving the Polar Plunge experience, re-launching this November and continuing into the new year, seems like a healthy opportunity too good to miss. The hotel’s “very own CEO (Chill Experience Officer)” Jodi Francks, guides guests starting with an invigorating plunge into Third Beach’s chilly waters in Stanley Park, then back to the hotel for warm towels, a hot toddy, and bottomless brunch at ARC Restaurant.
Feeling cocktail-y? Waterfront Gin is made in Comox at Wayward Distillery and crafted with the Fairmont Waterfront’s own rooftop honey, local botanicals (think spruce tips, cedar, Nootka rose, bull kelp and more) and the ARC bar shakes up some seriously delish concoctions using this gin.
Fairmont Waterfront’s rooftop garden was planted in 1996 and their Bee Program launched in 2008, and both were well ahead of their time. The garden was certified as a Wildlife Habitat by the Canadian Wildlife Federation in 2016, and the hotel’s chefs grow their own herbs, berries, and vegetables used on their menus in both the bar and restaurant. Hotel guests are welcome to stroll around, and I found this a peaceful, almost meditative practice, slowly winding through the quiet space, especially on my own. Check it out in the spring and summer when things are in full bloom.
Julia Common, Fairmont Waterfront’s Chief Beekeeper is a force to be reckoned with, like a true bee-whisperer and stand-up comic combined. Entertaining, funny and so knowledgeable I was captured by all Julia shared about the thousands of busy honeybees she keeps, happily producing about 200 lbs. of honey per year in their Pollinator Hotel, which she calls the “Bee & Bee”, a structure built with Hives for Humanity to help boost urban bee populations. Visit in the spring and summer months for daily Bee Tours and a chance to meet the delightful Julia.
Fairmont Waterfront has an ongoing partnership with Talaysay Tours, a local company owned by community members of the Shíshálh (Sechelt) and Sḵ _wx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nations that seems essential to get a real sense of place while you’re visiting. A knowledgeable guide (who happens to be the daughter of the woman who owns this company) walked me through a portion of Stanley Park while pointing out wild plants and explaining their medicinal and healing properties used by the indigenous peoples for centuries.
Enhancing your stay at the Fairmont Waterfront couldn’t be more rockstar than hopping on Harbour Air’s Vancouver Classic Panorama 30-minute flight. Walk five minutes along the seawall from the hotel lobby and you’re checking in at the float plane airport, soon to be whisked into the sky to see Vancouver from above, with aerial views of Stanley Park, English Bay, the North Shore Mountains and more. This will never get old, even for a local.
Fairmont Waterfront’s concierge pride themselves in sending guests out for real experiences in the city, not just at the hotel itself. Vancouver’s only Indigenous owned and run restaurant Salmon n’ Bannock is on the list, as is Granville Island Public Market since the hotel’s Director of Food and Beverage, Mike Pagnacco, collaborates with some of the vendors there. My favourites are La Bise Bakery which specializes in French pastries like traditional canelés and gluten-free dacquoise, Bon Mano Bon roasts beautiful nuts and herbal blends, and Hobb’s Pickles tasting bar serves up New York style dills, sweets, sours and more. —Catherine Dunwoody

This post made me want to pack a weekend bag right now. I stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront once and totally get what you mean about seeing it with fresh eyes — the views are unreal and that rooftop garden is such a peaceful surprise in the middle of downtown. I love how they mix wellness and local culture so naturally. Reading this reminded me of how I used the Write My Essay Online Canada serviice while on a mini getaway there — got my work done stress-free and actually enjoyed the staycation. This place really does make life feel a little more balanced.
