This Halloween week, Vancouver’s Michelin-recommended Ophelía transforms into a candlelit ofrenda—honouring Día de los Muertos with a one-night-only, multi-course dinner that’s equal parts haunting and heartwarming. On Thursday, October 30, executive chef Francisco Higareda pays tribute to his Mexican roots with a menu that riffs on tradition—think squid-ink margaritas, corn truffle sopes, and a cherry-mole short rib that reads like a love letter to ancestral flavours.
The night kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with a Margarita de los Muertos—Casamigos blanco brightened by a squid-ink tincture—before guests settle in for a 7 p.m. prix-fixe service featuring showstoppers like Kumamoto oysters with caviar, tuna tostada with kiwi and wasabi crema, duck-confit wontons and an Oaxaca chocolate cake with papantia vanilla-flower ice cream. The vibe is intimate and theatrical: dim lighting, flickering candles, staff in colourful calavera makeup and a soundtrack of Mexican folk music—all designed to celebrate memory rather than mourn.
Ophelía invites diners to join the fun by arriving in costume—the evening includes a Halloween Costume Contest with prizes—so whether you come for the cuisine, the culture, or the costume-contending theatrics, expect an evening that’s ceremonial, sumptuous and a little spooky. —Noa Nichol
