40, Fierce & Photogenic: What I Loved About My Boudoir Shoot With Jennifer Williams

Lifestyle & Parenting

I booked a boudoir shoot in my 40s because I wanted something that wasn’t about anyone else’s gaze—no approval-seeking, no “before” checklist—just a deliberate, unapologetic celebration of the woman I am right now. The result felt like a tiny rebellion against the idea that youth is the only thing worth photographing. It was warm, empowering and yes—wildly fun. I did mine with Jennifer Williams Boudoir and here’s what I learned—and loved—about the whole experience.

The consultation matters more than you think

Before we clicked a single photo, Jennifer made time, via email, for a conversation. Through a series of questions we talked about the vibe I wanted—soft and romantic, not aggressively sexual; outfits that felt like me; and the boundaries that mattered. If you’re nervous, ask for this first. A thoughtful consult, IRL or online, sets the tone and instantly turns “photoshoot” from a performance into a collaboration.

Wardrobe is therapy in fabric form

I arrived with a mix of lingerie and together we landed on three to five looks. Take things that flatter the parts of your body you love and pieces that whisper “secret” rather than shout “costume.” Jennifer’s team helped me tweak fits and suggested small styling swaps that completely changed an outfit’s energy.

Posing is coached—not forced

If you’ve ever seen boudoir photos and thought “How do they look so natural?”—there’s an art and a technique behind it. Jennifer guided me through poses in simple language—“lean this way,” “soften your jaw,” “breathe into this space”—and adjusted small things like hand placement and weight distribution. The coaching felt like a private masterclass in how to inhabit my body with ease.

Confidence is built between frames

There were moments I felt awkward or exposed—and then Jennifer would show me the image on the camera’s screen. Seeing myself framed beautifully was a small electric jolt of “oh, that’s me” that replaced self-critique with pride. The shoot became a series of tiny permission slips: to be playful, to be still, to be sensual on my own terms.

Practical tips I’d pass along

  • Hydrate and get a good night’s sleep before shoot day.
  • Eat a light snack between looks if needed—energy matters.
  • Communicate openly about edits and how you want to feel in your images.

Why I’d do it again (and again, and again)

In my mid-40s, this shoot felt like an official welcome into the next chapter. It was less about chasing an idea of perfection and more about honouring the life I’ve built in my body, the power I feel at this moment in my life—and letting someone else catch that vantage point through a lens. If the thought of it intrigues you, book the consult first and see how your story might unfold. Boudoir in midlife isn’t about pretending to be someone else—it’s about showing up, fully and beautifully, for yourself. —Noa Nichol
