If you loved the cosy whodunit charm of Mistletoe Murders, get ready—Season 2 doubles down on small-town intrigue, holiday sparkle and a few deliciously dark surprises. We sat down with Sarah Drew (Emily Lane) about returning to Fletcher’s Grove, digging into Emily’s past, and the strange joy of playing a character whose inner monologue is delightfully at odds with her cheerier storefront persona.
“Playing younger Emily was wonderfully surprising for me,” Sarah tells me. “I didn’t really understand how different she would feel until I got into hair and makeup and wardrobe … I was reacting to things with less guile and more naivety. We get to watch her shift as her world starts to close in on her, and as she begins to realize she shouldn’t be as trusting as she has been.”
That tug between outward charm and inward sass is part of what makes Emily so fun to watch. “I think we all perform to some degree in our lives,” Sarah says. “If we are honest about ourselves, we must admit that our inner monologue is often very different from our outward appearance, so I love tapping into that reality and truth when playing Emily.”
And the chemistry? Co-star Peter Mooney brings a playful energy that makes the flirtation feel effortless. “Peter and I hit it off right away… He’s so talented and such a wonderful leader on set. Both of us are very silly and keep each other laughing … It’s easy to find chemistry when you trust someone so much!!” Sarah confesses.
Season 2 also brought unexpected behind-the-scenes thrills—and a bit of real-world drama. “I actually broke my hand during a stunt in the middle of shooting episodes 5 and 6,” she reveals with a laugh. “Ironically I was wearing a real cast on my left hand for half of the last two episodes of season 2, and I wore a fake cast on my left hand for half of the last two episodes of season 1 … it will be fun for the audience to guess if we shot each scene before or after I broke my hand.”
For viewers planning a holiday binge, Sarah hopes the season lands like a warm, surprising hug. “The biggest journey for Emily in season 2 is learning to forgive her past and accept who she is… I want people to take the journey of love and forgiveness and feel some sense of real hope through her.”
Mistletoe Murders, Season 2 premieres Friday, November 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on W Network and STACKTV — perfect cozy-mystery viewing for your next snowed-in weekend. Interested in interviews? Sarah will be available for press on Tuesday, November 4. —Noa Nichol
