High-protein snacking is having a moment—and for good reason. Canadians want cleaner labels, smarter fuel, and grab-and-go options that actually satisfy. Enter Mighty Protein, the new chicken-based protein stick reshaping what “healthy snacking” looks like. Built to deliver complete protein without fillers or sugar, the product was crafted for everyone from gym-goers to busy parents to anyone simply trying to hit their daily protein goals without the chalky bars or sugary drinks.
We sat down with D’Arcy Finley, VP of Brand and Marketing at Maple Leaf Foods, for a behind-the-scenes look at how Mighty Protein came to life, what inspired its development, and how its creators stayed locked in with real consumer needs to build a category-defining snack. —Noa Nichol
What was the spark behind Mighty Protein — was there a single moment or insight that made Maple Leaf Foods decide “this is the product we need to build”?
Consumers are increasingly seeking high-protein snacks that are clean, convenient, and nutrient-rich, but the category has been dominated by bars, powders, and beverages that often contain too much sugar, fillers, and artificial ingredients. Market trends also show that protein snacks are growing 2X faster than total snacking, driven by Millennials, Gen Z, and GLP-1 users who want real, complete protein without compromises. Mighty Protein delivers on consumers’ desire for clean, protein-packed snacks that are convenient and designed to fuel everyday life.
The protein and wellness space is crowded. What gap in the market did you see that Mighty Protein aims to fill — and why did you believe Maple Leaf Foods was the right brand to fill it?
Compared to other offerings, Mighty Protein leads the category with more protein and no fillers, compared to traditional meat sticks at a comparable price. Mighty Protein delivers 12g complete protein with 0g sugar in a lean, appetizing chicken stick, giving Maple Leaf Foods a second, distinctive growth opportunity in snacks, alongside its Schneiders brand, craftsmanship-led Pepperettes. Singles (32g) and 8-pack pouches are shelf-stable (180-day code) for true “anywhere usage”. The protein to calorie ratio is really strong.
How did you and your team stay close to consumers’ evolving needs and preferences while designing Mighty Protein? Were there consumer trends, feedback, or research findings that strongly influenced the product’s development?
Mighty Protein is made for snackers looking for quality, delicious, protein-packed options for those on-the-go moments. This spans generations and lifestyle habits; Gen Z and Millennials are prioritizing protein as the foundation of a healthier, stronger lifestyle, and there’s been a rise in GLP-1 users also seeking nutrient-dense, muscle-supporting foods. But we know that other people are seeking to add more protein to their diets too.
Mighty Protein tries to balance nutrition, taste, convenience, and quality. What was the biggest challenge in getting that balance right — and how did you overcome it?
We wanted Mighty Protein sticks to stand out with a category leading ratio of protein to calories and zero sugar. We know how important these nutritional components are to people on the go and Canadians looking to eat more protein. But we also know people need to crave food too, so we tested and tasted many, many versions of the product before we found the right balance.
When building Mighty Protein, how did Maple Leaf Foods’ legacy and heritage in food production shape your approach — especially in terms of sourcing, transparency, and ingredient standards?
Under the Maple Leaf brand, Mighty Protein is a category-defining innovation that expands our portfolio into the growing snack space. Like all Maple Leaf products, Mighty Protein is made with simple, natural, and pronounceable ingredients that consumers trust and love. Mighty Protein reflects Maple Leaf’s commitment to quality and integrity while delivering real, complete protein in a convenient, craveable format. Our legacy in food production shaped every decision, from sourcing our premium chicken breast meat to ensuring clean-label transparency.
There’s often a stigma or misunderstanding around “protein products.” How do you hope Mighty Protein changes the conversation around protein in everyday diets? What misconceptions are you hoping to break?
One of the misconceptions around protein is that it is hard or challenging for Canadians to meet their protein goals. There is a lot of noise in the protein market, which is why we wanted to create a source of clean protein that is easy to grab for those on-the-go moments. We wanted to offer Canadians a product that is made from real, complete protein that supports all types of active lifestyles. A benefit of complete protein is that it contains all nine essential amino acids the body can’t make on its own, which is something the Mighty Protein chicken sticks deliver on.
With consumer demand for sustainable, ethically produced food rising, how does Mighty Protein answer those calls? What steps does Maple Leaf Foods take to ensure responsible sourcing or production?
As the world’s first major carbon neutral food company, Maple Leaf Foods remains relentless in its commitment to sustainability. The launch of Mighty Protein reinforces our commitment, maintaining and following the highest standards for responsible sourcing and production, reducing environmental impact while maintaining transparency and trust, so consumers can feel confident they are choosing protein that’s better for them and better for the planet.
Looking at the competitive landscape — from plant-based proteins to high-protein diets — what differentiates Mighty Protein, especially for consumers in Canada?
Mighty Protein is geared towards consumers looking for a clean, protein-packed snack in a convenient format. Each stick of Mighty Protein provides 12g of protein for just 110 calories – meaning you get more fuel, without the extra added sugars and fillers.
Mighty Protein sticks are also made with chicken as opposed to beef or pork, which offers an alternative protein selection for consumers looking to avoid beef or pork. Chicken is also lower in saturated fat and contains a higher protein density to support various digestive requirements.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering adding Mighty Protein to their regimen — whether they’re an athlete, busy parent, or just trying to eat healthier — what would you tell them to expect or prioritize?
Prioritize complete, clean protein. Protein has a higher thermic effect and satiety index than carbs or fat, which is one reason many people feel steady energy and fewer cravings when they ‘protein-front-load’ their day. Look for transparency in ingredients and make sure it fits into your lifestyle in a way that feels sustainable and not restrictive. When adding Mighty Protein to your snacking, know that Mighty Protein is a nutrient-dense snack that provides 12g of protein for just 110 calories. This way, consumers can get more fuel without the extra added sugars and fillers compared to other protein bars.
Five years down the line, what’s your vision for Mighty Protein? How do you hope it evolves — in product range, consumer impact, and perhaps even shaping Canada’s broader dialogue on nutrition and wellness?
With Mighty Protein, we’re redefining what convenient, high-quality protein sticks look like: no-sugar, chicken-based, clean-label protein stick. There are many interesting opportunities for Mighty Protein, including expanding the Mighty Protein line into new flavours and formats that meet evolving consumer needs. Our goal is to keep earning success through velocity and strategic placement in the snacking aisles and grab-and-go protein spaces, as well as health and wellness specialty stores. I’m excited to see where Mighty Protein will go.
