Vancouver is officially becoming a global hub for contemporary photography enthusiasts. The Vancouver Art Gallery has just announced a transformative gift from the Chan Family, consisting of more than 800 photographs by the ground-breaking American artist Stephen Shore.
This massive donation focuses on Shore’s acclaimed series Uncommon Places (1973–1981), establishing the Gallery as home to one of the most comprehensive collections of this work in the entire world.
Why It Matters
Stephen Shore is a pioneer who decisively changed the course of photography by establishing color film as a legitimate fine art form. Captured during road trips across North America, Uncommon Places finds beauty in the vernacular—ordinary scenes and everyday objects rendered with meticulous detail and vivid color.
“Our family has had the true privilege of living with these very special works at home and at the office for many years,” says Christian Chan. “We hope to ensure that Shore’s vision and legacy can be studied, exhibited, and enjoyed for generations to come”.

Mark your calendars for March 27, 2026, when the Gallery will debut Stephen Shore: Uncommon Places. This inaugural exhibition will feature more than 50 photographs, including several works that have never been exhibited publicly before.
