Get ready to take your West Coast wanderlust to terrifyingly beautiful new heights! Malahat SkyWalk has just announced the launch of The Overhang, an adrenaline-pumping glass cube suspended 250 metres (820ft) above sea level. Opening just in time for the Victoria Day long weekend (May 16-18), this is the first enclosed glass cube in the world to be attached to a spiral tower—and the only one of its kind in Canada.

The Ultimate Island Rush

Designed for the boldest thrill-seekers, The Overhang extends 2.13 metres (7ft) beyond the edge of the iconic 10-storey Spiral Tower. With transparent glass panels only inches thick, you’ll experience the heart-racing sensation of floating mid-air with nothing but a coastal rainforest and shimmering Pacific waters beneath your feet.

“It’s an exciting year for Malahat SkyWalk as we prepare to celebrate our fifth anniversary and welcome our one millionth guest,” says Nathan Bird, General Manager. “The Overhang is our most significant innovation since opening.”

The “Nitty-Gritty” (So You Can Step with Confidence)

Don’t let the “floating” feeling fool you; this cube is a masterpiece of B.C. engineering:

  • The Build: Constructed with a heavy-duty steel frame and five panels of structural glass.
  • The Strength: The floor is made of five layers of glass bound together, totaling 60 mm (2.36in) in thickness.
  • The View: Strategically placed to offer panoramic views of majestic mountain ranges and the lush arbutus forest.
  • Accessibility: Just like the rest of the Malahat SkyWalk, The Overhang is fully accessible so everyone can join the adventure.

Whether you’re looking for the ultimate Instagram shot or a way to conquer your fear of heights, this new addition cements the SkyWalk as Vancouver Island’s most epic lookout. —Noa Nichol
