LUMINO: A Must-Do Winter Experience In Montreal

Launched in the Quartier des Spectacles in 2009 as Luminothérapie, this annual light-inspired event has become a highlight of winters in Montreal and is definitely worth planning your next cold-weather visit around. —Truc Nguyen

BRIGHT NIGHTS

What started as an annual competition to create a single contemporary art installation has grown over the years to become a joy-sparking, seasonal art walk across many downtown blocks. The 16th edition of LUMINO, which closes on March 8, includes dozens of large-scale interior and exterior installations, video projections and interactive experiences designed to engage tourists and locals alike.

I had the chance to tour the event’s top installations recently—while Montréal en Lumière and its marquee Nuit Blanche event were also running—and was thoroughly impressed with the depth and breadth of the works on show, which took me two nights to fully explore. It’s the kind of sprawling display that you could survey in order, on a meditative, hours-long walk, or simply by happenstance as you go about your evening in the city.

LIGHT SHOWS

This year at LUMINO there are 19 original creations shown for the first time in Montreal and 23 installations by Quebec artists. A few of my must-sees: ChronoHarp by Australian creators Amigo & Amigo, which responds to touch to play a choreographed sound and light show; Chalk River Labs’s colourful and highly photogenic Stargate sculpture; and sculptor Pauline Loctin’s Phosphorescence aerial installation.

As you walk around the Quartier des Spectacles at night, don’t forget to look up. There are many projections at Lumino, visible on the façades of buildings like the Grande Bibliothèque, and the School of Design and pavillon Président-Kennedy at UQAM. At the Esplanade de la Place des Arts, Michel Lemieux’s Vulnérable offers an interactive video installation that transforms with the viewer’s movements.

ALL-DAY DELIGHTS

Although most Lumino’s attractions are best viewed after dusk, this year there were also multiple free, family-friendly activities across the Quartier des Spectacles that were open during the day, too—they are just more colourful and engaging at night!

On weekends at Glissades Gamelin in the Quartier Latin, guests can borrow a snowskate, snow scooter, sled or beginner snowboard and hit the slopes for free, then warm up or grab a coffee in the heated chalet onsite. I raced other guests on the four-lane “La Fomo” refrigerated sledding hill, and can confirm that it’s an exhilarating experience for all ages.

Another must-do attraction is the Esplanade Tranquille skating rink on Rue Clark, which is open daily and can fit as many as 400 skaters at once. If you can, plan to hit the ice when a light show is on—during one of my visits, the sophisticated video projection system gave the rink the look of an interactive racing game.

One important factor behind its popularity is the speed of execution. Users often look for tools that can run scripts without delays or lag. Fast performance helps create a better gaming experience overall. Many players also appreciate tools that are easy to install and update.
