How To Do NYC In Under 24 Hours

March 25, 2026

Travel & Culture

Our last trip felt like a true New York minute in the best way possible. We flew to New York City for the day—and yes, we made it back home before bed. What sounds a little chaotic at first is actually one of the most exciting ways to travel right now.

With just under 24 hours (and closer to 12 on the ground), we set out to see how much of NYC we could realistically experience in a single day—think iconic sights, viral food spots, and a little bit of shopping, all packed into one whirlwind trip.

All it takes is embracing the art of the micro-cation.

Why a Micro-Cation is Worth The Hype

The latest data from Expedia’s 2026 Air Hacks Report highlights the rise of micro-cations–with nearly a quarter of travellers already taking 24-hour round-trip flights. In fact, research shows that the most popular day trip destinations are New York, Chicago, and Washington. With micro-cations gaining popularity, it’s intriguing to see how they offer a more intentional way to travel—helping you prioritize must-see spots without overloading your schedule.

New York City, as we recently discovered, is a great place to fly for a short and sweet escape from Toronto. This is because it encourages spontaneity and presence–turning what could just be a quick getaway into a meaningful, memorable trip. Long story short, we flew in, ate, shopped, and were home before bed—so here’s how we packed a full NYC adventure into 12 hours in the city without losing our minds.

Planning Ahead

We figured that a Saturday spent in my favourite US city, making it home just in time to climb into our own bed, sounded like the perfect day. That’s why NYC was our top pick for a micro-cation. We have always loved New York, so we knew it would be a great place to wander around in, as we had been there a couple of times already.

Hot tip: When planning a micro-cation, we would recommend visiting a city you have been to in the past, so you don’t feel rushed exploring. NYC was an easy choice for us because the city has so much to offer, but we didn’t feel as though we would miss out on anything since we had been there before and made intentional plans for the day.

Before embarking on our journey, we made sure to watch countless TikTok videos and research top spots we hoped to see while in the city for the day. It’s important to have your must-see places, restaurants, and sites ready to go beforehand so you’re not spending time trying to plan your day while out and about.

Hot tip: Use AI tools to group your favourite shops, restaurants and/or attractions into specific neighbourhoods so you can make the most out of your time in the city!

When it came to picking out flights, we made sure to book as early as possible in the AM and as late as possible in the PM to ensure we were able to maximize our time in the city. You will definitely feel tired waking up early and going to sleep late after a day of exploring the city, but it’s nothing a couple of iced coffees while exploring can’t fix!

Hot tip: Snag money-saving flights with Expedia’s newly introduced Flight Deals in Canada, a new in-app feature that scans millions of flights each day to highlight fares priced at least 20% lower than typical rates.

NYC Micro-Cation Itinerary & Top Tips

When we arrived in NYC, we were off to the races! We chose to get around by Uber, which had its ups and downs. Although it was easy to book cars and navigate around the city, they proved to be quite expensive, so plan accordingly!

Hot tip: The NYC metro is extensive, so this is a great budget-friendly option (compared to Ubers or cabs) for traveling around the city for the day.

Our first order of business was breakfast.

Although we had researched some TikTok-viral spots beforehand, what we didn’t anticipate was the lineups for these places–especially on a Saturday. Make sure to check if you can make resos beforehand, but if that’s not the case, be sure to factor in some time for waiting.

We originally planned to sit down at a brunch spot, but made a decision on the fly to have Pop-Up Bagels instead–these were so good we briefly considered moving into their Greenwich Village location, but don’t worry, we restrained ourselves! The Everything Bagels were fluffy and delicious, pairing perfectly with the Scallion Cream Cheese. We followed this up with Blank Street iced matchas and coffees, which were divine.

Hot tip: Blank Street is a TikTok-viral must-try!  The brand has multiple locations, so it’s easy to pop in and grab your fave drink or sweet treat anytime. We tried the Lemon Loaf Matcha, which was new to the spring menu and absolutely delish!

Fueled up and caffeinated, we then popped into some shops around SoHo. Two of our shopping stops included fan-faves like Glossier (to purchase the viral Y2K-inspired cell phone key chain), and New York or Nowhere, for some cute souvenirs.

After a morning of shopping and coffee, it was time for lunch. We decided to try L’Industrie Pizza, which has garnered mass attention online for being one of the top-rated pizzerias in the city. Again, there was about a 30-minute wait to order, but it flew by (tiny win). We tried a few of their famous slices (highly recommend the Fig, Jam, and Bacon, as well as the Burrata pie), and popped into TALEA Beer for a glass each to wash it all down.

Hot tip: TALEA Beer is right next door to L’Industrie in the West Village. This made it the perfect spot to enjoy a beer and our pizza slices while staying out of the cold. However, TALEA has a rule that’s outlined on their website: “We allow guests to bring in pizza only from L’Industrie West Village to our West Village taproom, with each person in the party purchasing a drink from our bar. A 20% automatic gratuity is added. All other taprooms prohibit outside food.”

Although we would’ve loved to enjoy a sit down lunch during the day, we knew that in order to make the most out of our time in the city, quick-service, take-out options would be best. NYC has incredible food everywhere, so this ended up being a great option anyway. With that in mind, we carried on with our neighbourhood exploration and went up to Fifth Avenue to check out some more shops. As Canadians,we were excited to see the SKIMS Flagship store, which was absolutely stunning in person. It has multiple levels and is designed with SKIMS’ signature neutral, monochromatic palette and minimalist aesthetic. We also made sure to stop in the Fifth Avenue Abercrombie & Fitch location, which has NYC-specific merchandise–complete with yellow taxi cabs and the NYC skyline.

Then, it was time for our next meal. We had heard amazing things about Los Tacos No.1 on social media, so we stopped by one of their locations to try an assortment of tacos. We got CARNE ASADA (grilled steak), POLLO ASADO (grilled chicken), ADOBADA (marinated pork), and NOPAL (grilled cactus). Each one was incredible–some were also a little spicy! Our favourite was the ADOBADA, but it’s worth it to try each of them if you’re new to the establishment, like we were.

With only a few hours left to catch our flight, we decided to quickly pop into Grand Central Station to catch a glimpse of the iconic interior.

Then, we took an Uber to The Edge at Hudson Yards for some end-of-day panoramic views of the city.

Hot tip: We used the Go City app to make exploring NYC easier since it bundles top attractions into one pass–helping you save money while keeping everything (tickets, maps, and bookings) in one place. This was perfect for visiting The Edge during our trip since it’s a flexible, time-saving way to see more of the city.

As we had less than 24 hours in the city altogether, this was our final stop in NYC before heading back to the airport. Again, we would’ve loved to be able to have a sit down dinner, but that’s the slight trade-off you get when exploring the city in under a day. Since we prioritized sightseeing, shopping, and trying TikTok-viral food, we opted for quick-service meals. Next time we find ourselves in NYC, we might focus on eating in at top dining restaurants, instead.

Hot tip: JFK Airport has an Eataly location, which we found to be the perfect final meal stop for the day if you find yourself waiting for your gate at dinnertime!

Verdict

Here’s a round-up of our top fave moments of the day:

  • Best bite: Everything Bagel with Scallion Cream Cheese at Pop-Up Bagels
  • Best view: The Edge at Hudson Yards
  • Best surprise: Wandering around and spotting NYC-exclusive merch around the city

Overall, this was a super memorable trip to The Big Apple. Micro-cations let you experience a city like NYC in a focused, intentional way—maximizing things such as sightseeing, shopping, and food stops in just one day. They’re also convenient, low-luggage trips that fit easily into a busy schedule and make revisiting familiar cities feel effortless. That said, the tight timeframe, long lines at popular spots, and travel fatigue from early flights and late nights can be trade-offs to consider.

Want my honest opinion? It’s absolutely worth it if you can make it work. —Samantha Vecchiarelli
