Bridal, But Make It Forever: OUMA Atelier & Vestige Debut the Lantern Sling

April 6, 2026

Weddings

What happens when your dream wedding dress evolves into a piece of wearable history? This season at New York Bridal Fashion Week, two Vancouver-based powerhouses—OUMA Atelier and Vestige—are proving that bridal beauty doesn’t have to end at the altar. Designers Ou Ma and Aileen Lee are debuting the Lantern Sling, a zero-waste series of one-of-a-kind phone slings crafted from repurposed bridal remnants.

The collaboration is rooted in a deeply personal narrative: Vestige founder Aileen Lee first worked with Ou Ma on her own folklore-inspired wedding gown in 2023. Now, they are transforming those same high-end materials into sculptural objects designed for everyday use.

A Modern Keepsake with Heritage Roots

The Lantern Sling is a masterclass in craftsmanship and cultural storytelling:

  • Repurposed Luxury: Each piece is crafted from delicate offcuts of textured silk organza and 3D lace from the OUMA atelier.
  • Hardware-Free Design: In a nod to traditional Chinese button and sliding knot techniques, the adjustable strap is created entirely without hardware.
  • Deeply Personal Craft: For Ou Ma, these knotting techniques echo those passed down from her grandmother, bridging past and present through a shared language of making.
  • Symbolic Silhouette: The design draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese hé bāo—small pouches historically used to carry intimate belongings.
  • A Touch of Luck: Each sling is finished with a locally sourced red leather cord, symbolizing luck and celebration.

This limited series embodies poetic restraint and material integrity, ensuring that no two pieces are identical.
