Prom is often seen as a rite of passage—but for many students, it hasn’t always felt within reach. That’s exactly what Pathways Prom is working to change, and now, the impact is growing.
Following a successful launch that welcomed students from more than 80 schools, the inclusive initiative is expanding across Ontario this June, with new events in Ottawa and Toronto set to reach approximately 200 students. Designed specifically for graduating students with disabilities and special needs, Pathways Prom is redefining what this milestone can look like—making space for every student to celebrate in a way that feels comfortable, supported, and joyful.
“Last year, we watched students walk into Prom for the very first time—many of them had never believed it would be an option for them,” says Trevor Calof, founder of Pathways Prom. “Every student deserves to experience a milestone like this.”
What sets Pathways Prom apart is its thoughtful, student-first design. From sensory-conscious lighting and moderated sound levels to quiet spaces and alternative activities like games and creative stations, the experience is built to meet a wide range of needs. The result? A celebration that goes beyond tradition—one that prioritizes belonging over expectation.
Backed by more than $1 million in community support through the Pathways Pledge, the program also helps remove financial barriers, ensuring cost is never a reason to miss out.
At a time when conversations around equity in education continue to evolve, Pathways Prom offers a powerful—and uplifting—example of what inclusion can look like in action. —Noa Nichol
