The Savoury Muffins My Daughter Is Crazy About (From A Canadian-Made Mix!)

You know those rare, magical foods your kid asks for on repeat? Not negotiates, not tolerates—asks for? For us right now, it’s these savoury muffins … and I did not see that coming.

Enter: a humble box from Canadian brand Maison Orphée that has somehow become a weekly staple in our kitchen. Their savoury herb muffin mix is one of those “why didn’t I know about this sooner?” finds—effortless, surprisingly wholesome, and genuinely delicious.

The prep couldn’t be easier (which, as any parent knows, is half the win). You just add olive oil, milk, eggs, and a touch of honey, mix, and bake. That’s it. No complicated steps, no measuring out ten different ingredients while someone tugs on your sleeve. In under half an hour, the kitchen smells like a cozy café and you’ve got a dozen golden, fluffy muffins ready to go.

What makes them so good? It’s the texture and flavour combo. They’re soft and tender, but with a little crunch from a hearty mix of seeds—flax, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, even chia—plus subtle hits of dried onion, leek, and nutritional yeast that give them that savoury, almost cheesy depth. They’re the kind of thing you can serve alongside dinner … but also snack on straight from the counter (we do both).

My daughter? Completely obsessed. She’ll grab one for a snack, ask for one in her lunch, and then casually request another “just because.” I’ve started making double batches—and even then, they disappear fast.

(To note: this is a girl who normally won’t eat or picks out the “green bits” from her meals; the fact she devours these muffins without dissecting them for her most hated culinary colour is extraordinary, IMO.)

The best part is how versatile they are. We’ve kept them simple, but you could easily dress them up—add cheese, herbs, chopped veggies, whatever you have on hand. They work as an after-school snack, a brunch side, or even a quick grab-and-go breakfast.

In a world of overly sweet baked goods and ultra-processed snacks, finding something this easy, this tasty, and this kid-approved feels like a small victory. And honestly? I’m just happy to have something savoury in the rotation that everyone’s excited about. —Noa Nichol
