This show-stopping soccer ball cake looks impressive, but it’s surprisingly easy to make using a bowl-shaped cake pan (or oven-safe mixing bowl).
Serves
12–16
Ingredients
Vanilla Cake
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1¼ cups milk
Buttercream
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups icing sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
Decoration
- 2 lbs white fondant
- 1 lb black fondant
- Edible silver shimmer (optional)
- Green coconut grass or green buttercream for serving board
- Small FIFA or Canada flag toppers (optional)
Step 1: Bake the Cake
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 2-litre oven-safe mixing bowl and an 8-inch round cake pan.
- Make the cake batter by creaming butter and sugar, then adding eggs and vanilla.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk.
- Fill bowl about ⅔ full and remaining batter into round pan.
- Bake:
- Bowl cake: 55–65 minutes
- Round cake: 30–35 minutes
Cool completely.
Step 2: Build the Soccer Ball
- Place round cake on serving board.
- Level the bottom of the bowl cake.
- Place dome cake on top of round cake to create a sphere shape.
- Trim if needed.
- Cover entire cake with buttercream.
- Chill for 30 minutes.
Step 3: Create the Soccer Ball Pattern
The easiest method:
- Roll white fondant about ⅛ inch thick.
- Cover the entire cake smoothly.
- Cut black fondant pentagons and white hexagons using paper templates.
You’ll need approximately:
- 12 black pentagons
- 20 white hexagons
Attach with a tiny brush of water.
For extra realism, lightly dust with edible shimmer.
Easy Shortcut Version
Instead of fondant:
- Frost cake white.
- Use black icing and a soccer-ball stencil.
- Pipe pentagons directly onto the cake.
Perfect for beginner bakers.
