Fragrance layering has become one of beauty’s biggest obsessions, with scent lovers building perfume wardrobes and creating signature combinations that reflect their mood, personality and style. But according to The 7 Virtues founder Barb Stegemann, the secret to effortless layering isn’t just choosing the right fragrances—it’s what’s happening behind the scenes. We caught up with Barb to talk about the brand’s newly named Harmony Molecule™, the rise of scent personalization, and why fragrance has become one of our most powerful forms of self-expression.

You created The Harmony Molecule™ after watching people feel intimidated by perfume creation in Grasse. What was it about that moment that stayed with you, and why was it so important to make fragrance feel joyful and accessible instead?

I was in Grasse, France, the birthplace of modern perfumery, and I watched people spend hundreds of dollars creating a perfume only to pour it down the sink because they didn’t like what they had made. They were overwhelmed by endless choices and worried about getting it wrong.

That stayed with me because I believe creativity should empower people, not intimidate them. I left with a dream to create a system where anyone could experience the joy of making a fragrance without fear of failure. When I founded The 7 Virtues, I designed every perfume to work together. Years later, that became The Harmony Molecule™. It allows people to layer, experiment, and play with confidence because every combination creates something beautiful. Fragrance should feel like wonder, not perfection.

The Harmony Molecule™ is described as an “invisible thread” connecting every fragrance in the collection. If it could represent a life lesson or personal philosophy, what do you think that invisible thread would be?

For me, that invisible thread is possibility.

In life, we often think we have to choose one path, one identity, or one version of ourselves. The Harmony Molecule™ reminds us that seemingly different things can work together. Strength and softness. Courage and vulnerability. Ambition and kindness.

I’ve built my life and business around the idea that we are not one thing. We are a blend of experiences, dreams, setbacks, and triumphs. The invisible thread is the belief that everything belongs and that our differences can create harmony rather than conflict.

Fragrance has become a form of emotional self-care for many people. How do you personally use scent to shift your mood, ground yourself, or reconnect with who you are?

I use fragrance as an anchor. Before a big meeting, a television appearance, or a challenging conversation, I deliberately choose a scent that reminds me of who I want to be in that moment.

Scent bypasses logic and speaks directly to memory and emotion. You can’t overthink perfume. It hits you and you respond. That’s what makes perfume such a powerful tool in our lives. When I wear Vanilla Woods, it reminds me to stay grounded and confident. Candied Lychee brings me into a state of wonder and playfulness. Clementine Dream inspires optimism and possibility.

I often tell people that perfume is the fastest way to change a state of mind. A single spray can become a ritual that reconnects you to your intentions for the day.

Vanilla sits at the heart of The Harmony Molecule™ because of its comforting and familiar qualities. What are some of your own happiest or most meaningful memories associated with the scent of vanilla?

Vanilla has always felt like comfort, safety, and home.

Growing up, life was not always easy. We experienced financial hardship and uncertainty, so simple pleasures carried tremendous meaning. The scent of vanilla reminds me of baking, family gatherings, and moments when everything felt okay, even if only for a little while.

As an adult, vanilla became symbolic of resilience. It is warm, welcoming, and universally loved, yet it also has remarkable depth. That duality resonates with me. Vanilla can be comforting and powerful at the same time, which is exactly how I hope people feel when they wear our fragrances.

People often create playlists for different moods, seasons, or moments in life. Do you think fragrance wardrobes serve a similar purpose, and what scents do you find yourself reaching for when you need confidence, comfort, or joy?

Absolutely. I think of fragrance as the soundtrack you wear.

Just as you might choose one playlist for a workout and another for a quiet evening, fragrance allows you to express different parts of yourself. Some days you want to feel bold and magnetic. Other days you want comfort, calm, or pure happiness.

For confidence, I reach for Vanilla Woods because it feels both powerful and approachable. For comfort, Amber Vanilla wraps around me like a cashmere blanket. For joy, Candied Lychee brings an instant smile, while Clementine Dream fills me with optimism and reminds me to dream bigger.

If someone walked into The 7 Virtues Perfume Atelier feeling unsure of their fragrance style, what would you hope they discover about themselves through the process of layering and creating their own signature scent?

I hope they discover that there is no wrong answer.

Many people arrive saying, “I don’t know anything about perfume.” By the end, they realize they know more than they think because fragrance is deeply personal. It is about memories, emotions, aspirations, and self-expression.

The most beautiful part of the experience is watching someone stop seeking approval and start trusting their own instincts. They create something that reflects who they are, name it, and leave with a scent that exists nowhere else in the world.

That moment is bigger than perfume. It is a reminder that creativity lives inside all of us, and when we trust ourselves, extraordinary things happen.
