Vancouver’s Fraserhood is about to welcome a restaurant with heart, heritage and plenty of reasons to linger over one more glass of wine.
Opening August 4, Maria Celeste is the long-awaited passion project of brothers Justin and Cristian Isidro, who have spent years honing their craft at some of Vancouver’s—and Europe’s—most celebrated restaurants before bringing their shared vision to life. Named after their mãe (mother), the intimate 36-seat restaurant pays tribute to Portugal’s beloved tascas—the neighbourhood gathering places where great food, local wine and even better conversation are simply part of everyday life.
“Growing up in Portugal, tascas were where everyone ended up on any given day because they were all about welcoming the whole community,” says Justin Isidro. “That’s the feeling we want the moment people walk through our doors—there’s always a seat for you at our table.”
The menu celebrates Portuguese comfort food through the lens of British Columbia’s exceptional seasonal ingredients. Expect shareable plates like Rissóis de Camarão (crispy shrimp turnovers), Bacalhau à Brás, and rich Portuguese seafood rice, alongside larger-format dishes including Pluma de Porco Ibérico with fresh clams and Carrara Wagyu Bife à Portuguesa. For those who prefer to leave the decisions to the kitchen, the Come e Cala-te tasting menu offers a chef-curated journey through the day’s freshest ingredients.
“Everything on this menu starts with memories of the way our mãe cooked and the way Portugal eats,” says chef Cristian Isidro. “We take those traditions and let British Columbia’s ingredients speak through them.”
The drinks are just as thoughtfully curated. Justin, a Certified Sommelier and former Michelin Guide Vancouver Best Service Award winner, has assembled an all-Portuguese wine list that travels from the crisp whites of Vinho Verde to elegant reds from Alentejo and beyond, spotlighting both iconic producers and small family wineries.
Designed in collaboration with Studio Roslyn, the warm, wood-filled dining room evokes the effortless charm of a traditional Portuguese tasca—inviting, understated and built for long meals shared among friends.
For anyone who has wandered the streets of Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve wishing they could bottle that feeling, Maria Celeste may be Vancouver’s closest thing to a Portuguese getaway—no passport required.
