In an era of fast fashion and fleeting trends, Maxwell-Scott is doubling down on something far more enduring: craftsmanship, longevity, and quiet luxury. We sat down with CEO William Scott Forshaw to talk about building a heritage-driven brand for the modern consumer—where Italian artistry, sustainability, and timeless design aren’t just buzzwords, but the foundation of every piece. —Noa Nichol

Maxwell-Scott has built a reputation for refined, heritage-inspired leather goods. How do you balance timeless British design sensibilities with the Italian craftsmanship that defines each piece?
At Maxwell-Scott, everything begins with a very British approach to design; understated, purposeful and quietly confident. We’re inspired by heritage, but never bound by it. Our goal is to create pieces that feel timeless rather than nostalgic.
That design philosophy is then brought to life in Italy, where our artisans apply generations of expertise to every detail. Each piece is handcrafted using traditional techniques, resulting in a level of precision and character that simply can’t be replicated at scale.
It’s this relationship between British design and Italian artistry that defines us, where classic, elegant design meets exceptional craftsmanship.
In an era of fast fashion and disposable accessories, Maxwell-Scott stands firmly in the world of slow luxury. Why is investing in well-made leather goods still such a powerful statement of personal style today?
There’s something incredibly powerful about choosing to buy less, but better. In a world driven by immediacy, investing in a piece that’s designed to last decades is a statement of intention, it speaks to confidence, discernment and a sense of permanence.
Our pieces are created to age beautifully, developing a patina that reflects the life of the person who carries them. That emotional longevity is something fast fashion can’t offer.
Ultimately, true style isn’t about constant reinvention, it’s about consistency and quality. When you invest in something enduring, it becomes part of your identity and journey rather than just an accessory.
Your collections—from handbags to travel pieces—feel both elegant and highly practical. How does the brand approach design to ensure each piece is as functional as it is beautiful?
We believe the most beautiful designs are those that work effortlessly. Every Maxwell-Scott piece begins with function, how it will be used in real life, whether that’s commuting, travelling or navigating a busy day.
From there, we refine. Pockets and compartments are carefully considered, straps are engineered for comfort and proportions are balanced to ensure ease of use. Many of our designs incorporate features like secure closures, laptop sleeves and thoughtfully placed pockets, all seamlessly integrated into the aesthetic.
The result is something that feels intuitive to use, yet elevated in appearance, because true luxury should simplify your life, not complicate it.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the luxury space. How does Maxwell-Scott approach responsible production while maintaining the exceptional quality associated with traditional leather craftsmanship?
Sustainability is ingrained in every decision we make at Maxwell-Scott. From educating our employees to consciously choosing the most sustainable options where possible, it’s our guiding principle, at the forefront of everything we do.
For us, sustainability starts with longevity. If a product is made to last 20 or 30 years, it naturally reduces the need for replacement, and that’s one of the most responsible choices we can make.
We work with Italian tanneries that use traditional vegetable-tanning methods and prioritise durability and quality in every hide. Our production is deliberately small-scale, focused on craftsmanship rather than mass output, which helps minimise waste and our Italian Atelier is run entirely on solar panels and recycles all wastewater.
We’ve also made exceptionally positive changes to our packaging; our luxury leather accessories are neatly packaged and delivered in recycled and recyclable packaging.
We also stand behind our products with a 25-year warranty, reinforcing our belief that luxury should be something you keep, not replace.
It’s about creating pieces that honour both the craft and the future.
For someone building a forever wardrobe of accessories, what are the key leather pieces you believe every stylish traveller or professional should invest in first—and why?
A forever wardrobe should be built on pieces that offer both versatility and longevity, items that move with you through different moments in life.
I’d start with a beautifully structured work bag or briefcase. It’s something you’ll use almost every day, and it sets the tone for your professional style.
Next, a refined travel holdall, something that feels just as appropriate in an airport lounge as it does on a long weekend away.
And finally, a timeless everyday bag, elegant yet practical enough to carry you from day to evening with ease.
These are the pieces that quietly anchor your wardrobe. When chosen well, they don’t just complement your style, they define it.

The timeless world of leather craftsmanship is beautifully explored in features about brands like Maxwell Scott. These artisans prioritize quality materials and traditional techniques over mass production. If you appreciate such dedication to craft, https://www.asperaria.com shares that same philosophy with their handcrafted leather notebooks and journal covers. Each piece is made from vegetable-tanned leather meant to last a lifetime. In conclusion, supporting artisans who prioritize quality over quantity is rewarding. Your purchase becomes a lasting companion, not a disposable item. Look for brands that are transparent about their materials and manufacturing processes when buying leather goods.
