If your social feeds suddenly seem full of capri pants, polka dots, and ballet flats, you’re not imagining it. According to new Google Search data, Canadians are embracing a decidedly nostalgic approach to summer style, reviving some of fashion’s most iconic silhouettes while putting a fresh, modern spin on them.

The biggest surprise? The return of the capri pant.

Searches for capris are currently higher than ever before, making them the top trending spring pant, while interest in “capri leggings” has skyrocketed by 180 per cent over the past three months. Once the unofficial uniform of the early 2000s, the cropped silhouette is proving that Y2K style still has plenty of staying power.

Skirts are getting a longer, more polished update as well. Google reports that searches for “knee-length skirt” have reached a 10-year high, with denim emerging as the material of choice. Think effortless tailoring, classic proportions, and an aesthetic that feels equal parts old-money and off-duty model.

And then there are the polka dots.

The timeless print is experiencing a full-blown renaissance, with search interest hitting an all-time high. In particular, the white polka dot skirt has become one of the season’s most sought-after pieces, adding a playful touch to otherwise minimalist wardrobes.

When it comes to footwear, practicality is finally having its fashion moment. Searches for kitten heels have climbed to a 20-year high, while ballet flats, Mary Janes, and slingback flats continue their reign as the shoes of the season. Comfortable, chic, and endlessly wearable, they’re proof that style no longer has to come at the expense of sore feet.

The quiet luxury movement is also showing no signs of slowing down. Searches for silk scarves have reached an all-time high in 2026, while silk shorts have become the top trending piece in the category, offering an easy way to elevate even the simplest summer outfit.

Beauty trends are following a similarly soft and playful direction. Lilac is currently the most searched nail colour of the season, while “ombré French nails” and “polka dot nails” are breakout trends for those looking to add a little personality to their manicure.

Perhaps the most futuristic trend, however, isn’t what Canadians are wearing—it’s how they’re shopping. Google’s AI-powered virtual Try On feature now lets users upload a full-length photo and instantly see how trending pieces like capri pants or kitten heels might look on their own body before buying.

The takeaway? Summer 2026 is all about blending nostalgia with practicality. From Y2K capris and vintage-inspired heels to timeless polka dots and silky accessories, Canadians are proving that the best trends aren’t necessarily new—they’re the ones worth bringing back. —Noa Nichol
