Flower crowns had their moment. This summer, the coolest festival accessory isn’t woven from blooms or destined for the bottom of a drawer come September. Instead, it’s sparkling from ears across the country.
Welcome to the era of the ear stack.
With TikTok’s #earringstack hashtag surpassing 13.4 million views and style icons like Hailey Bieber embracing curated ears, the trend has evolved into something far more meaningful than another fleeting fashion obsession. Mixing hoops, studs, charms, cuffs and gemstones, ear stacking allows wearers to create constellation-like compositions that are entirely their own.
And according to Sarah Bolton of Canadian jewelry brand BodyMods, that’s exactly why the look has resonated so deeply.
“Piercing has evolved into a form of self-expression,” she says. “What was once a simple rite of passage has become a highly personalized way for people to showcase their individuality and style.”
As perceptions around piercings have shifted, multiple ear piercings have become less taboo and more mainstream. Today, they’re celebrated as wearable reflections of personality.
One of the biggest appeals? No two ear stacks look exactly alike.
“Similar hoops, studs and cuffs can be styled in completely different ways, allowing each person to create a unique look,” Sarah explains. “It allows for creativity without requiring a completely new wardrobe.”
It’s also the perfect trend for festival season.
“Whether it’s music festivals, outdoor concerts, summer parties, or events like the Calgary Stampede, ear stacks elevate outfits without adding bulk or getting in the way,” she says. “They’re practical as well as stylish.”
For anyone intrigued by the look but unsure where to begin, Sarah recommends starting with what you already have.
“It’s always best to understand what piercings you already have and think about whether there’s a piercing you’d like to add,” she says. “Give some thought to your personal style. Is it minimalist, bold, bohemian? Your ear stack should complement how you dress.”
From there, choose an anchor piece and build around it.
“Always have a statement piece and build the rest of the stack around it,” she advises. “Mix different sizes and textures. Combining studs, hoops, charms and subtle details creates dimension without overdoing it.”
And despite what social media might suggest, more isn’t always more.
“Not every piercing or space on your ear needs to be filled,” Sarah notes. “Sometimes a well-spaced-out and intentional look elevates the style more than a fully stacked ear.”
Of course, not all body jewelry is created equal.
As fast fashion continues to influence accessories, Sarah encourages consumers to think beyond trends and prioritize safety and quality.
“We recommend staying away from cheap materials such as brass, copper and other low-grade metal alloys, and sticking with implant-grade materials such as 316L surgical steel and Grade 23 titanium,” she says. “Think of body jewellery as an investment. Quality pieces not only look better and last longer, but they also support the long-term health of your piercings.”
Choosing an experienced piercer matters, too.
“It’s very important that you choose a reputable professional piercer who is properly trained and knowledgeable about sterilization procedures, healing periods and aftercare,” she says. “This is something we take pride in.”
After more than 24 years designing jewelry in Canada, Sarah has witnessed a remarkable shift in the industry.
“The single largest shift has been from what was once considered a taboo and niche market to what’s now become completely engrained in our culture and everyday lives,” she says. “Multiple piercings are no longer a statement against the norm—they’ve become part of modern self-expression.”
Ear stacks, she believes, capture that evolution perfectly.
“They express your style and vibe, and they speak volumes without having to say a word,” she says. “Rather than following a single trend, people are mixing metals, textures, gemstones and placements to create something that feels authentic to them.”
In other words, this isn’t just another summer accessory trend.
