Dining & Wine

This show-stopping soccer ball cake looks impressive, but it’s surprisingly easy to make using a bowl-shaped cake pan (or oven-safe mixing bowl).

Turning the FIFA World Cup ball into cake – part 2! ⚽️GUYS I actually can’t believe I made this!? I know it’s far from perfect, but I have never even carved cake before so I am so proud of myself. On the flipside, this has now made me more delusional about my abilities 😂 What do you guys think? @Bloom Nutrition #bloompartner @FIFA World Cup #fifaworldcup

Ingredients

Vanilla Cake

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1¼ cups milk

Buttercream

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups icing sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Decoration

  • 2 lbs white fondant
  • 1 lb black fondant
  • Edible silver shimmer (optional)
  • Green coconut grass or green buttercream for serving board
  • Small FIFA or Canada flag toppers (optional)

Step 1: Bake the Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 2-litre oven-safe mixing bowl and an 8-inch round cake pan.
  3. Make the cake batter by creaming butter and sugar, then adding eggs and vanilla.
  4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk.
  5. Fill bowl about ⅔ full and remaining batter into round pan.
  6. Bake:
    • Bowl cake: 55–65 minutes
    • Round cake: 30–35 minutes

Cool completely.

Step 2: Build the Soccer Ball

  1. Place round cake on serving board.
  2. Level the bottom of the bowl cake.
  3. Place dome cake on top of round cake to create a sphere shape.
  4. Trim if needed.
  5. Cover entire cake with buttercream.
  6. Chill for 30 minutes.

Step 3: Create the Soccer Ball Pattern

The easiest method:

  1. Roll white fondant about ⅛ inch thick.
  2. Cover the entire cake smoothly.
  3. Cut black fondant pentagons and white hexagons using paper templates.

You’ll need approximately:

  • 12 black pentagons
  • 20 white hexagons

Attach with a tiny brush of water.

For extra realism, lightly dust with edible shimmer.

Easy Shortcut Version

Instead of fondant:

  • Frost cake white.
  • Use black icing and a soccer-ball stencil.
  • Pipe pentagons directly onto the cake.

Perfect for beginner bakers.
