Though the news just dropped today, we’re certainly not the first to report that coffee giant Starbucks is going strawless.
The plan is to eliminate single-use plastic straws globally by 2020, thanks to a specially designed strawless lid, which will become the standard for all iced coffee, tea and espresso beverages (including the available-from-tomorrow Salted Cream Cold Foam Cold Brew, boasting a hint of caramel and topped with salted cream cold foam). Alternative-material straws—including paper or compostable plastic—will be rolled-out for Frappuccino blended beverages, and available by request for customers who need a straw, pending successful pilots that are underway.
The straw-stonishing savings? More than 1 billion plastic straws per year eliminated from Starbucks stores. Now that’s news that definitely doesn’t suck! —Noa Nichol
