Shibori, a form of tie dye, originated in Japan and Indonesia in the eighth century, spreading to Africa and then hitting the western world in the early 1900s. Today, it’s a fashion trend that can be worn by all, in a wide range of funky and fun applications. Want to get in on this colourful craze? Here are five stylish ways to wear tie-dye. —Jennifer Cox
leggings. Leg-huggers can be found in an endless array of designs and patterns, including tie dye. Choose complementary colours or contrasting—with tie dye, there are no rules! Pair with: a solid-coloured tee and a casual denim jacket.
totes. Bring a little nostalgic tie dye everywhere you go. Totes and shoulder bags pack a punch of panache in twists of colour. Pair with: beachy wear. Tie-dye totes are perfect for a day at the beach or park.
shoes. Slip your tootsies into a rainbow-inspired pair of canvas tie-dye shoes (like the sweet Vans Eras, pictured). You can even DIY it by picking up a white pair of sneaks, colouring them with permanent markers and applying drops of rubbing alcohol to get a swirly effect. Pair with: adorable capri pants.
shirts. A crisp, collared shirt lends a more formal look but, when patterned with spun colour, it’s the perfect paradox of style.
Pair with: wide-legged trousers and retro kicks.
maxi dresses. Proudly wear that rainbow of colour from head to toe—the flowy feel of a maxi dress is even more carefree in tie dye. Pair with: sandals, or go barefoot. Focus all that attention on your Hippie motif.
